The Iranian government will only make a decision regarding the national team’s participation in the World Cup after it receives a response from FIFA concerning the relocation of their matches, as stated by the country’s Minister of Sport, Ahmad Donyamali.
The Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI) has been advocating for the transfer of their three group-stage matches from the United States to Mexico, due to the involvement of American military forces alongside Israel in strikes that have triggered ongoing conflict in the region.
Last month, FFIRI announced that they were in talks with FIFA about changing the match venue, whilst Iran’s sports ministry has prohibited national and club teams from travelling to nations deemed hostile until further notice.
However, FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed last week that Iran is scheduled to play their matches as planned.
“Our request to FIFA for the relocation of Iran’s games from the U.S. to Mexico is still valid, but we have yet to receive a response,” Donyamali told the Turkish state news agency Anadolu in an interview published over the weekend.
“If approved, Iran’s participation in the World Cup will be ensured. However, FIFA has not yet replied.”
“As the Minister of Sports, along with the Iranian football federation, we will keep the football team prepared for the World Cup. Nonetheless, the ultimate decision lies with our government.”
Iran is slated to play all their Group G matches on U.S. turf—against New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles, followed by a final match against Egypt in Seattle.
Last month, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that while Iran’s national team is welcome to compete in the U.S., it may not be safe for their “life and wellbeing.”
He later clarified that any threats to the players would not originate from the United States.
“According to FIFA’s relevant regulations, security must be ensured in the host country,” Donyamali remarked. “However, with the World Cup approaching, providing assurances during this time raises concerns.”
“Given these circumstances, the likelihood of Iran participating in the World Cup matches in the U.S. is quite low. Yet, should the necessary security guarantees be provided, our government will decide on Iran’s involvement in the World Cup.”
FIFA did not respond immediately to an emailed request for comment.
The World Cup is set to take place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19.
