Finland celebrated their second victory in three outings within Group B3 of the 2027 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, triumphing over Slovakia with a scoreline of 4-2 in a thrilling encounter at Bolt Arena, Helsinki.
In their opening match back in March, Finland gave Portugal a tough challenge but ultimately fell short, conceding two late goals. They rebounded strongly at home with a convincing win against Latvia, placing them second in the group and marginally ahead of Slovakia on goal difference.
Securing three points today was crucial to their aspirations of topping the group, and Finland got off to a magnificent start when Katariina Kosola expertly controlled a probing ball from Joanna Tynnila and remained composed to put her side in front just four minutes into the match.
A significant moment unfolded midway through the first half, as a well-crafted move saw Lotta Lindstrom skillfully hold up the play at the edge of the box before setting up Adelina Engman, who scored stylishly on her 100th cap.
However, the contest reignited with 10 minutes left in the first half when Martina Surnovska delivered an incisive through ball to Klaudia Fabova, who managed to beat the onrushing Anna Koivunen to net Slovakia’s opening goal.
The second half saw the match turn definitively within an eight-minute period.
Finland struck again around the midway mark of the half, regaining possession as Slovakia pushed forward and countering effectively. Engman received a precise pass while sprinting down the left flank, and her pinpoint cross was met with a powerful header from Paulina Nystrom, marking her first goal at the international level.
Yet, moments after this, the home team found themselves on the back foot when Dominika Skorvankova was fouled in the penalty area by Oona Siren, allowing Patricia Hmirova to convert from the penalty spot.
Finland finally sealed the win with just 15 minutes remaining, courtesy of the “other” Nystrom. Captain Eva Nystrom soared above the defenders at a corner, and after her initial header was blocked, she capitalised on the rebound, slotting the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
This 4-2 victory elevates Finland to six points in the standings, although they still trail Portugal on goal difference. The Portuguese have an opportunity to restore their three-point advantage against Latvia later tonight, while Finland’s next challenge takes them to Latvia on Saturday, the 18th.
