Following Real Madrid’s stalemate with Girona on Friday, Barcelona seized the unexpected advantage to clinch a convincing 4-1 victory over their Catalan rivals Espanyol, extending their lead to nine points at the top of the LaLiga table.
Espanyol, aiming for their first win at Camp Nou since 2009, found themselves largely on the back foot during the early stages, as Barcelona dictated the game in this fierce Catalan derby.
The visitors’ task was made even tougher when Ferran Torres met Lamine Yamal’s corner at the back post, heading home his first LaLiga goal since January 31.
Barcelona dominated possession to the tune of 85% at one point, which meant that a lapse in concentration was always a possibility.
Fortunately for the hosts, this confusion did not lead to the equaliser; instead, just 25 minutes in, a sublime outside-of-the-foot pass from Lamine found Torres in the centre, who deftly guided the ball past the advancing Marko Dmitrovic into the net.
The Serbian goalkeeper made a remarkable double save later on, denying both Eric Garcia and Fermin Lopez, thus maintaining a semblance of respectability on the scoreline as the referee brought the first half to a close.

The referee’s eagerness to blow his whistle at the start of the second half disrupted the game’s rhythm, further frustrating both teams’ efforts. Espanyol continued to struggle offensively, with Cyril Ngonge often being outmuscled, a trend that was evident throughout their performance.
Barcelona appeared poised to increase their lead before a goal from Ferran’s hat-trick attempt was disallowed due to Garcia’s offside.
However, within a minute, Pol Lozano found himself unmarked just outside the box and unleashed a right-footed shot that left Joan Garcia with no chance.
This goal revitalised the visitors, although Marcus Rashford squandered a golden opportunity to extend Barcelona’s lead.
As Espanyol started pressing, Lamine edged past Dmitrovic to tap the ball into an empty net.
With Espanyol keen to leave the pitch as quickly as possible, Rashford managed to add a final touch to the scoreline. This latest defeat now leaves Espanyol winless in 14 LaLiga encounters (D5, L9), while Barcelona has upheld their significant dominance over their local foes, now winning 30 of their last 30 meetings (W23, D7).
