In the following discussion, former French international Yohan Cabaye provides insights into how PSG’s academy upholds its high standards and its commitment to nurturing even more talent for the first team of the capital club.
Firstly, thank you for granting us access to the media centre ahead of this Youth League semi-final against Real Madrid. Yohan, what are your impressions of the overall development and visibility afforded to these young players?
“It’s crucial for us to showcase the efforts that have been made. We often speak about the players, which is understandable, but there’s a dedicated team behind them: technical staff, medical professionals, and educators.
“All these individuals deserve recognition. My responsibility is to ensure that everyone feels valued, connected, and in sync so that the focus remains on the players.”
This Youth League semi-final is a significant occasion. How are you preparing for it?
“Absolutely, it’s a significant event, but it shouldn’t create pressure or be seen as the ultimate goal. Primarily, it serves as a chance to challenge ourselves against other top-tier academies, to gauge our standing, and to determine whether this generation can compete at the very highest level.”
Are you more pleased with the process than the outcome?
“Precisely. It’s about the journey we’ve taken and the months of diligent effort we’ve invested. We find ourselves in the semi-finals of the Youth League, as well as in the semi-finals of the Coupe Gambardella, and we’re performing well in the U19 and U17 leagues.
“This is a cumulative achievement developed over several seasons, driven by a resolve to advance year after year. Today, I take great pride in that.”
You seem quite optimistic as the season draws to a close…
“Indeed, I have faith in both the players and the staff. My role is to ensure that everyone feels positive, engaged, and energized so that we can aim for something truly remarkable.”
It’s been a decade since the last final. Is there any specific significance to that?
“Symbolism can always be found. There’s a strong momentum and high expectations here. Young players should not impose limits on themselves.
“With dedication and hard work, they can aspire to reach the pinnacle of success and carve their own legacy.”
You see them on a daily basis; do you see many from this group transitioning to the first team?
“I certainly hope so, but we must be realistic: not everyone will make it. This season has seen several young talents get their chance, which indicates that a genuine pathway exists. However, nothing is guaranteed.
“They need to deliver, put in the hard yards, and grasp every opportunity that comes their way.”
How do you ensure that the same high standards are upheld among these young players?
“It’s our job to keep them challenged, ambitious, and focused. To earn rewards, hard work is essential. There’s no mystery to it.”
Is it conceivable to envision a future PSG side featuring even more homegrown players?
“Nothing is beyond reach. It must continue to be a motivating factor. Our aim is to prepare players for the first team, but ultimately, the decisions lie with the management.
“Currently, there’s a genuine investment in youth, creating new opportunities. It’s up to us to stay grounded and keep pushing forward.”
