The Brisbane Broncos have experienced a rollercoaster ride this season, facing ongoing challenges as they navigate their title defence.
After a shaky start with two losses, the defending champions have bounced back impressively, securing three consecutive victories. However, their latest triumph against the Titans has come at a daunting cost.
Star fullback Reece Walsh sustained a facial fracture, while pivotal playmaker Ben Hunt faces an extended absence due to a knee ligament injury. Additionally, veteran halfback Adam Reynolds will be sidelined for at least one match with a groin issue.
This calamity has severely hindered Brisbane’s spine, leaving coach Michael Maguire in a precarious situation.
Maguire is required to announce his squad on Tuesday afternoon in preparation for a Queensland derby against the Cowboys on Friday night.
Following Saturday’s match, he acknowledged that he will need to tap into the full depth of his senior roster.

“We have a squad, and it’s widely acknowledged,” he remarked.
“However, performance still remains mandatory, and that’s an expectation upheld by our leaders and the entire group.
“Our club has depth, as we work diligently to ensure that, so we’ll call upon it now.”
After Walsh’s injury on Saturday, recalled winger Jesse Arthars stepped in at fullback.
In prior seasons, Selwyn Cobbo would have taken over the No.1 jersey, but he has moved across to the Dolphins during the off-season.
Maguire alluded to Hayze Perham potentially being a dark horse for the fullback role against North Queensland, though Arthars seems the leading candidate. Deine Mariner is another unconventional option to fill Walsh’s shoes.

As a consequence, a wing position has opened up. Josiah Karapani was suspended last week following an incident with police while celebrating in Fortitude Valley. If his internal suspension is lifted this week, he will be eligible to reclaim his wing position. Alternatively, talented rookie Antonio Verhoeven may step in after being called from the bench to replace Arthars on Saturday.
With Reynolds’ exit against the Titans, many anticipated that Hunt would step into the halfback role, but with Hunt sidelined for up to eight weeks due to his injury, and fellow playmaker Billy Walters also out with a long-term knee issue, it leaves two relatively inexperienced players vying for a position in the halves.
Tom Duffy, 22, who played six games for the Cowboys last season, is in contention for his Broncos debut against his old team this week.

Brisbane also boasts 29-year-old Josh Rogers, a two-time Queensland Cup five-eighth of the year who has already appeared in seven NRL matches for the Broncos over the last two seasons.
However, with Ezra Mam lacking experience at halfback, it seems probable that Duffy will be called in to guide the team.
Hunt’s position on the bench will likely be filled by emerging hooker Blake Mozer, who is set to make his first NRL appearance in over a year.
“The Broncos are truly being put to the test regarding their depth,” commented club legend Sam Thaiday on Nine’s Today.
“Losing three of their four spine players for several crucial games ahead will definitely reveal the character of the squad.”
Following this round, the Broncos will face the Tigers, Bulldogs, Roosters, Sea Eagles, and Warriors before enjoying a bye in round 12.
