Eddie Howe acknowledged that the responsibility lies with him after Newcastle United suffered a 2-1 defeat against Crystal Palace on Sunday, which saw them slip to 14th place in the Premier League.
Newcastle were ahead thanks to William Osula’s hooked effort just before the interval, but Palace substitute Jean-Philippe Mateta netted an equaliser in the 80th minute before scoring from the spot in stoppage time.
“I must always start by evaluating my own performance. I firmly believe that I’m the one who is primarily accountable,” Howe stated.
“We should never have lost that match. While we fielded a younger team, that’s not a valid excuse. We had enough seasoned internationals on the field to manage the defensive duties effectively.”
Newcastle have now squandered 25 points from positions where they were winning this season, and Howe expressed his disappointment that his players were unable to finish off their opponents.
“Those statistics are astounding. They’ve overshadowed our season,” he remarked.
“The inability to build on promising moments in the game and to score more goals while continuing to attack is concerning. That’s not the tactical approach we instruct the players to follow.”
Newcastle will host Bournemouth next on Saturday.
