Eddie Howe acknowledged that the responsibility lies with him following Newcastle United’s 2-1 defeat against Crystal Palace, a result that saw them slip to 14th place in the Premier League after conceding two late goals on Sunday.
Newcastle took the lead with William Osula’s hooked finish just before halftime, but Palace’s substitute Jean-Philippe Mateta equalised in the 80th minute before netting a penalty during injury time.
“I always look to myself first. I consistently emphasise that I’m the one who is accountable,” Howe stated.
“There’s absolutely no reason we should have lost that match. While we fielded a relatively young team today, that’s not an excuse. There were enough seasoned internationals on the pitch to manage the defensive side of the game effectively.”
Newcastle have now relinquished 25 points from winning positions this season, and Howe expressed his frustration at his players’ inability to finish off matches.
“Those statistics are astounding. They’ve marred our season,” he remarked.
“The failure to capitalise on promising phases of play, as well as the inability to score additional goals and maintain our attacking momentum, is not part of the tactical guidance we provide.”
Next up for Newcastle is a home match against Bournemouth on Saturday.
