Atletico Madrid’s manager, Diego Simeone, expressed his disappointment following his team’s disappointing performance that severely dented their slim hopes of claiming the LaLiga title, after a 1-0 loss to Las Palmas on Saturday. He acknowledged that his side required “perfect numbers” to remain in the chase.
Currently sitting in third place, Atletico conceded a last-minute goal to the relegation-threatened side, leaving them with 63 points—10 behind leaders Barcelona and three adrift of second-placed Real Madrid, who are set to face Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.
With just six league matches remaining, Simeone appeared to concede that the one title still in reach for Atletico this season may soon slip away, admitting the match “did not unfold as they had envisioned.”
“If we harboured any hopes of winning the league, we needed to achieve perfect numbers. Today we fell short,” the Argentine stated to the media.
“The first half was quite solid, but we failed to take the lead. The second half began flat and we couldn’t generate the play we had anticipated.”
Simeone dismissed any notion of his players lacking attitude but conceded that their tactical implementation and individual performances were lacking.
“It wasn’t an issue of attitude; we simply didn’t perform well,” he remarked. “There was no fluidity, no opportunity to link plays. We organised the game in a certain manner and made adjustments to find solutions, but nothing materialised.”
The coach stated that even though the title is nearly out of reach, he will maintain the same determination for every upcoming match and focus on improving the team’s defensive capabilities.
“We always prepare with the same enthusiasm and will continue to manage it as we have over the past 14 years,” Simeone asserted.
“We have faced greater struggles in this latter part of the season than we did at the start. Defence is a crucial aspect of our game, and we require players who grasp what we need.”
