Valencia’s coach, Carlos Corberan, emphasised the remarkable mental resilience displayed by his team in clinching their first victory at Real Madrid since 2008 on Saturday.
Hugo Duro scored the decisive goal in stoppage time, enabling Valencia to extend their lead to seven points above the relegation zone with a surprising 2-1 triumph.
Corberan commended his players for maintaining their composure after Vinicius Junior equalised for the locals just five minutes into the second half, negating Valencia’s initial advantage gained through Mouctar Diakhaby’s opening goal.
“They demonstrated the necessary character and mental strength to bounce back from any adversity,” Corberan remarked to the press.
“In football, the emotional aspect cannot be dissociated from the tactical. It’s simply not feasible.
“When confronted with a setback like Real Madrid’s goal, especially at a venue known for their comebacks, our ability to regroup, keep our heads up, and remain optimistic has been absolutely vital.”
Valencia’s goalkeeper, Giorgi Mamardashvili, made a series of outstanding saves, including denying Vinicius Jr from the penalty spot in the first half, a feat he jokingly claimed earned him a wager.
“I had a chat with Vinicius, and I came away with 50 euros,” Mamardashvili shared with reporters post-match. “I suggested a bet of 50 euros, he agreed, and I emerged victorious.”
“He really ought to pay me, but I haven’t seen it yet.”
