Chelsea has decided to sideline their record signing, Enzo Fernandez, for two matches following the midfielder’s public uncertainty regarding his future at Stamford Bridge, manager Liam Rosenior revealed on Friday.
The Argentine World Cup champion has been dropped from Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale, as well as next Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Manchester City.
Fernandez, who has been leading the team in the absence of the injured Reece James, mentioned he would “consider his options post-World Cup” and indicated a preference to reside in Spain.
“I spoke with Enzo just an hour ago. As a football club, alongside my role in this process, we’ve opted not to have him available for tomorrow’s match against Port Vale, and he will also miss out on the game against Manchester City next Sunday,” Rosenior told the media.
The 25-year-old midfielder, whose contract runs until 2032, has been rumoured to be on Real Madrid’s radar, although he has dismissed claims of any discussions with the Spanish giants.
‘Disappointing’ leadership
Rosenior referred to Fernandez’s public statements as “disappointing,” especially considering his leadership position during Chelsea’s turbulent phase.
The Blues have suffered four straight defeats, getting eliminated from the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain with an 8-2 aggregate score, and have slipped to sixth place in the Premier League.
“I think it’s disappointing for Enzo to make such remarks. However, on a personal level, I have no negative comments about him,” added Rosenior.
“But in terms of our culture and what we aim to establish, a line was crossed, necessitating a sanction.”
The Telegraph reported that a number of Chelsea players were dissatisfied with Fernandez’s criticism of his teammates during matches.
“The door isn’t closed on Enzo; that’s crucial. This is a sanction,” Rosenior stated. “We must safeguard this club and its culture,” he added. “A line was crossed during the international break.”
“What’s clear is that when he has played, even in the loss at Everton, his commitment has never been in question.”
