Geelong’s star midfielder Cameron Guthrie has seen his ongoing injury challenges take a turn for the worse, as the premiership-winning Cat recently underwent surgery on his Achilles. This procedure has left him sidelined for an indefinite period right before the start of the AFL season.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Geelong confirmed that Guthrie had surgery to address “soreness and discomfort” in his left Achilles tendon.
According to the club’s announcement, the 32-year-old is hopeful of returning to the training track within a fortnight, with aspirations of participating in football drills within a month.
The timeline for his return to play will be determined early in the season, the statement noted.
Since playing a vital role in the Cats’ 2022 grand final victory and sharing that season’s club best and fairest award with Jeremy Cameron, Guthrie has appeared in only 10 AFL matches.

“Our medical and high-performance team are optimistic that surgery was a necessary step for Cameron to achieve full recovery and maximise his chances of a successful return,” stated Geelong’s football chief Andrew Mackie.
In 2023, Guthrie managed to play just six AFL matches due to a foot injury that necessitated surgery. Following that, quad and Achilles issues restricted him to a mere four games in 2024.
The 2025 AFL season is set to kick off with an exciting clash between Geelong and Brisbane at the Gabba on March 6.
