Jude Bellingham, the midfielder for Real Madrid, stated that Wednesday’s second leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich will be crucial in determining his club’s season, particularly as they’ve struggled in domestic competitions.
After finishing last season without any trophies, Real Madrid finds itself on the brink of another barren year, with the Champions League representing their most viable opportunity for silverware this time around.
Bayern Munich currently holds a 2-1 advantage following their victory in Madrid and needs to avoid defeat to secure a place in the semi-finals.
During a press conference in Munich on Tuesday, Bellingham remarked that failing to advance would essentially mark the end of Real Madrid’s season.
“Given our current circumstances in the league and the cup competitions, for us, it’s almost like a final tomorrow,” the England international commented.
“We want to continue competing for something rather than letting matches slip by us.”
Real Madrid sits nine points adrift of fierce rivals Barcelona in La Liga, with nine fixtures remaining, having already lost to them in the Spanish Super Cup final and been eliminated from the Copa del Rey by second-tier Albacete in the Round of 16.
“Any elimination from the Champions League feels catastrophic, and as I mentioned, we recognise that tomorrow represents a final for us,” Bellingham acknowledged.
“It truly feels like everything hinges on this match. We must approach it with that mindset. It’s an all-or-nothing scenario.
“While we might wish for additional opportunities if things don’t go our way tomorrow, unfortunately, that’s not how football operates.
“We’ve dropped far too many points in the league, but tomorrow provides us a chance to rectify that. If we perform well in the Champions League, we can afford to shift our focus away from the league.”
The 22-year-old praised England captain Harry Kane, but asserted that he would do everything possible to hinder the Bayern striker’s success.
“We’ll hope to prevent him from winning the Champions League tomorrow, which would have significant implications,” he commented.
“He’s an exceptional player who has refined his skills to an extraordinary level. It’s a pleasure to witness as a teammate.”
Bellingham made a notable impact after coming off the bench in the first leg, as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury.
“It’s been a rather challenging season for me,” he admitted.
“However, I’m feeling much better now. The toughest part about returning is often the mental aspect. A scan might show that your hamstring is fine, but much of the blockage is in your mind.”
The midfielder also addressed speculation regarding his lifestyle in the Spanish capital, refuting claims that he had been indulging too much.
“Stories suggesting I’m excessively enjoying nightlife in clubs or drinking are simply untrue,” Bellingham emphasised.
“Of course, I’ve had a few enjoyable nights out in Madrid, but the frequency mentioned is exaggerated.
“I maintain a high level of professionalism, dedicating myself daily at the training ground to improve in various areas.”
Real Madrid’s manager, Alvaro Arbeloa, was confident ahead of the match, asserting that his team would draw upon their extensive European experience.
“We are Real Madrid, a club that approaches this challenge with a winning mentality. We are the holders of 15 Champions League titles, a team of exceptional players,” he stated.
“The outcome remains uncertain, but what we know for certain is that we are Real Madrid, and with our capabilities, we will endeavour to give our all.
“We simply need to demonstrate our true identity.”
