Jude Bellingham, midfielder for Real Madrid, remarked that the upcoming second leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich on Wednesday will be pivotal for his club’s season, especially given their uneven performance in domestic competitions.
After ending last season without any trophies, Real Madrid now find themselves on the verge of another year without silverware, with the Champions League being their best opportunity this time around.
Bayern Munich lead the tie 2-1 following their victory in Madrid and will be looking to secure a place in the semi-finals by avoiding defeat.
In Munich on Tuesday, Bellingham stated that failing to advance on Wednesday would effectively signal the end of Real’s season.
“Given our recent league and cup performances, tomorrow feels like a final for us,” the England international said.
“Considering the situation we’re in, we want to keep competing for something meaningful instead of letting matches slip by.”
Real Madrid currently trails their rivals, Barcelona, by nine points in La Liga, with only nine games remaining, having also lost to them in the Spanish Super Cup final. Furthermore, they were eliminated from the Copa del Rey by Albacete in the round of 16.
“Any defeat in the Champions League feels catastrophic, and as I’ve mentioned, we recognise that tomorrow is effectively a final,” Bellingham added.
“It feels like everything hinges on this match. We must view it that way. It’s a do-or-die situation.
“While we might wish to believe there will be more opportunities if it doesn’t go our way tomorrow, that’s not the reality of football.
“We’ve let too many points slip in the league. Tomorrow presents an opportunity to change all of that. If we perform well in the Champions League, we can place the league on the back burner.”
The 22-year-old also commented on England captain Harry Kane but affirmed his determination to prevent the Bayern striker from succeeding.
“We’re hopeful we can stop him from clinching the Champions League tomorrow, as that would have significant implications,” he noted.
“He’s an outstanding player and has reached a level where he has nearly mastered his craft. It’s a pleasure to witness as a teammate.”
Bellingham made an impact after coming off the bench in the first leg as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury.
“It’s been a rather frustrating season for me,” he admitted.
“However, I’m feeling good now. The toughest part of returning is mental. A scan may show that your hamstring is fine, but a significant part of the challenge resides in your mindset.”
The midfielder also addressed rumours suggesting he was indulging too much in the nightlife of the Spanish capital.
“There have been false claims about my private life, suggesting that I frequent clubs, enjoy drinking, and go out often. That simply isn’t true,” Bellingham clarified.
“Of course, I’ve appreciated nights out in Madrid, but the frequency implied simply didn’t occur.”
“I’m very professional. I’m at the training ground each day working to improve myself in various aspects.”
Real Madrid’s coach, Alvaro Arbeloa, remained optimistic ahead of the challenge, asserting that his team would draw upon their extensive European experience.
“We are Real Madrid, a club that approaches the game with the intent to win. We carry the legacy of 15 Champions League titles, boasting a squad of exceptional players,” he remarked.
“No one can predict how it will end, but we are certain of who we are, and with our collective abilities, we can give it our all.”
“It’s essential that we showcase our true identity.”
