Belgium rallied to secure a 1-1 draw against Mexico in a friendly match held at Soldier Field in the United States, extending the Red Devils’ unbeaten streak to 11 games in preparation for this summer’s FIFA World Cup (WC).
El Tri made a fast start, displaying a commendable intent to challenge the Belgian defence and took the lead after just 19 minutes. Following a corner kick from the left side, the ball found Jorge Sanchez, who slotted it home from close range, marking his third goal for the national team and putting Mexico ahead.
Javier Aguirre’s squad continued to dazzle, coming close to doubling their lead shortly after the half-hour mark; Julian Quinones had two excellent opportunities to score. The Al-Qadsiah forward’s first attempt was expertly blocked at a crucial moment, and just moments later, his shot from inside the box was parried away by goalkeeper Matz Sels.
At half-time, Rudi Garcia had a lot to consider, as his Belgian team had managed only a single shot in the entire first half. However, whatever adjustments he made during the break paid off, as the Red Devils surged forward right from the start of the second half.
In a stunning turn of events, Belgium equalised less than a minute after the restart, with Dodi Lukebakio receiving a pass from Youri Tielemans and unleashing a stunning shot from 20 yards that found the back of the net.
Curiously, the following phases of play were rather uneventful, with both teams struggling to create significant chances. The high energy and drive that El Tri exhibited in the first half faded after the interval, while the Red Devils couldn’t muster any further creativity following Lukébakio’s fantastic equaliser.
Both coaches made a series of substitutions midway through the second half in an attempt to inject some life into the match, but ultimately, neither side could find a winner as the final whistle approached.
With this draw, Mexico remains unbeaten in their last five outings and will next face Ghana in a friendly match on Friday 22nd May, just weeks ahead of the WC. Meanwhile, Belgium will be eager to bounce back with a win when they travel to face Croatia on Tuesday 2nd June in an important friendly ahead of their World Cup campaign.
