Bayern Munich require just two more goals at St Pauli on Saturday to surpass the 54-year-old goalscoring record for a Bundesliga season.
Vincent Kompany’s dominant league leaders have found the back of the net 100 times in the Bundesliga this season, just one goal shy of the highest tally in the history of Germany’s top flight, with six matches left in the 34-game season.
The record was initially set in the 1971-72 season by a formidable Bayern squad that included iconic players such as Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Muller, and Uli Hoeness.
Bayern’s achievement of reaching the century mark in goals illustrates their commanding performance this season.

If Bayern maintain their current scoring pace, they could tally 121 goals by the end of the season, surpassing records held in both the Premier League and La Liga, which each operate on a 38-match schedule.
The all-time record in the top-five European leagues, 125 goals set by Torino during a 40-match Serie A season in 1947-48, is also within reach.
Bayern may need to accomplish this feat without Harry Kane, who is pursuing a league record of his own.
With 31 goals from 26 Bundesliga matches, Kane is still 10 shy of the all-time record of 41 goals established by Robert Lewandowski in the 2020-21 season.

Kane was sidelined during England’s March internationals due to an ankle injury but made a comeback to net the decisive goal in Bayern’s 2-1 Champions League victory over Real Madrid on Tuesday.
However, the England skipper didn’t appear to be fully fit, and he could be rested against St Pauli with the quarter-final second leg on Wednesday in mind.
One player likely to feature prominently is Michael Olise, who is also in line for a record-breaking season.
Olise, who assisted Kane’s goal against Real Madrid, has scored 18 Bundesliga goals this season, just three shy of the all-time record set by Thomas Mueller in the 2019-20 season.
Angelo Stiller, a key midfielder for Stuttgart, not only earned a recall to the German national squad last month but has also attracted interest from various sectors globally.
Teenage darts prodigy and Manchester United supporter Luke Littler recently praised Stiller during a Premier League Darts event in Berlin, saying he is his favourite German player.
In an interview with DAZN, Littler urged, “come to United – we need help”.
Stiller’s resurgence has coincided with Stuttgart’s impressive form, as they have lost only two of their last 15 matches, bringing them closer to a return to the Champions League.
“That’s fantastic; he is also my favourite darts player,” Stiller declared about Littler in an interview with the Bundesliga website last Friday.
Stiller expressed both honour and mild irritation regarding Littler’s entreaty to join United.
“It’s natural for speculation to arise in this line of work. One shouldn’t dwell too much on it and just focus on one’s game.”
