Atletico Madrid secured a spot in the Copa del Rey semi-finals with a resounding 5-0 triumph over Getafe at the Estadio Metropolitano. This defeat means the Azulones have failed to secure a win against Atleti in their last 27 encounters.
On the domestic front, Atletico has showcased their defensive strength this season, having conceded just 14 goals in LaLiga after 22 matches, and allowing only one goal during their journey to the quarter-finals of this tournament.
However, it was their striking ability that truly stood out during an opening half that must rank as one of the most lopsided of the season.
Right from the outset, the hosts were in control, taking the lead within the first 10 minutes as Giuliano Simeone powered home a header from a Javi Galán cross.
Before the half-hour mark, they doubled their lead, with Simeone finding the net once more, coolly finishing after a swift Atleti attack.
A combination of last-ditch defending from Juan Iglesias and a fingertip save from Jiri Letacek kept Samuel Lino from increasing the margin, while Julián Alvarez missed a golden chance, shooting over the bar when one-on-one with the Getafe keeper.
Eventually, Atleti extended their advantage again when Lino tucked into the bottom corner from within the box. Getafe struggled to find their rhythm and failed to pose a significant threat, with Christantus Uche missing a superb opportunity to narrow the deficit just before half-time as he shot wide of the post.

An offside call denied Simeone his hat-trick just after the interval, but the remainder of the match felt rather uneventful. Getafe were more involved, yet they failed to create any significant threats, forcing Juan Musso into only a couple of simple saves.
With the damage already inflicted, manager Diego Simeone took the opportunity to make substitutions and rest key players. There was still time for two late goals, as replacement Angel Correa struck from outside the box, shortly followed by another from sub Alexander Sørloth.
Overall, Atletico couldn’t have wished for an easier evening, and they continue their pursuit of silverware, impressing across all three competitions. However, their upcoming clash with city rivals Real Madrid is set to be a far tougher challenge.
As for Getafe, they must come to terms with this heavy defeat, though they can take solace in the fact that their six-match winning streak has come to an end.
