Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, has expressed his reservations about in-stadium announcements regarding VAR decisions, as he believes these may add extra pressure on referees.
This initiative is currently being tested by the English Football League during the League Cup semi-finals, with the second leg of matches occurring this week.
Officials will disclose the final verdict after consulting the VAR pitchside monitor or once factual matters, such as accidental handballs by a goalscorer or offside calls, have been concluded.
Supporters will only hear about the final decision made.
Last year, the Premier League admitted that the experience for fans regarding video technology was “far from satisfactory”.
Chief football officer Tony Scholes stated this week that the league’s goal is for referees to announce the outcomes of VAR reviews starting from the upcoming season.
However, Slot, whose team is in fine form and aims to overcome a 1-0 deficit against Tottenham at Anfield on Thursday, has raised concerns regarding this possible adjustment.
“I question whether this is beneficial for the referee since he’s already facing significant pressure from the home supporters,” the Liverpool manager commented during his pre-match press conference on Wednesday.
“Having to explain decisions that might go against the home team could amplify that pressure for every successive call he has to make.”
“But they always assure me that they are trained for this, which I doubt I would be. If I had to blow the whistle during training, I’d likely think, ‘Alright, he’s a bit upset; let’s give a free kick to make up for it’, so I don’t think I’d make a great referee.”
Liverpool sits six points clear at the top of the Premier League and remains in contention for a quadruple of titles during Slot’s inaugural season. He appears unfazed by the club’s inactivity in the January transfer window.
“Perhaps there aren’t many managers with such a strong squad as I do,” he remarked.
“We have a fantastic squad, and if you look at the league table, it indicates that the faith we placed in our players has been validated, and fortunately, we don’t have many long-term injuries.”
The victor of the two-legged encounter between Liverpool and Tottenham will face either Newcastle or Arsenal in the League Cup final at Wembley in March.
Newcastle, managed by Eddie Howe, leads 2-0 following the first leg and prepares for the return match at St James’ Park on Wednesday.
