In his latest press conference, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has shared his thoughts ahead of the showdown with Manchester United scheduled for this Saturday.
This season has seen Tottenham wrestle with a myriad of injuries, but several key first-team players are now poised to make their return for a crucial encounter against United, a match that could determine the future of Postecoglou’s tenure.
Offering a glimpse of optimism for Spurs supporters, Postecoglou provided updates on player fitness in the lead-up to the clash.
“This week has been positive regarding the health and wellness of the squad I’m responsible for. The players currently on the field have really benefitted from it.”
“On the injury front, it’s fantastic to have some players back, as it enhances the quality of our training sessions. (Guglielmo) Vicario is definitely back and training well. James Maddison is fit and ready. We’ve had Destiny (Udogie), Wilson (Odobert), and Brennan (Johnson) all participating in training, and they’re in a solid position.”
Postecoglou also addressed his defensive options, which have been limited during the season.
“With Micky (van de Ven), we’ve made a decision focused on looking beyond the injury to how we can get him back into a good rhythm. He’s working with specialists on his mechanics and is currently training well. His return is approaching, but we want to ensure everything is right before rushing him back.”
“As for (Cristian) Romero, he has been dealing with a healing issue. Unfortunately, the recovery hasn’t progressed as swiftly as we had hoped. We could have brought him back sooner, but we’re opting to be cautious. Depending on the circumstances, his return could also be imminent.”
“I’m not a medical professional, and there are boundaries when discussing injuries and medical matters. Both players are training at different stages of their rehab.”
“We’ve also sought external opinions on (Van de Ven) to provide him with additional guidance, which complements our efforts, focusing on helping his body adapt to the demands of being the elite athlete he is.
“It’s crucial to protect our key assets, and he is indeed a significant asset for the club. Safeguarding his long-term career for the sake of a couple of weeks is worthwhile.”
Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario is on track to return following an ankle fracture sustained in November, a development that will significantly bolster Spurs’ options, particularly as they have been reliant on 21-year-old Antonin Kinsky.
“Vic is an exceptional goalkeeper and has a commanding presence among the lads. He really lifts everyone’s spirits.”
“It’s been challenging without him, especially as we’ve utilized three different goalkeepers. While they have all done their bit and none have let us down, Vic’s experience is invaluable.”
“Maddison also exudes great self-belief, and that energy flows through the team. He’s ready to start. Destiny’s involvement has been shorter, and we’ll assess that as we go along. I’m looking forward to a scenario where we can have Destiny, Wilson, and Timo (Werner) all getting some minutes in midweek.”
Postecoglou proceeded to discuss his counterpart at United, Ruben Amorim, expressing his admiration for the manager following a challenging start to the season.
“I have immense respect for all managers because I understand the difficulties of the role. Ruben is simply pursuing his vision. Manchester United has scouted him and recognised the unique way he approaches the game. Bringing him in was a purposeful decision.”
“If United commits to Ruben for two years, they will absolutely witness progress, as that’s how long it genuinely takes. Anyone believing that significant changes can happen in a brief period is, frankly, living in an alternate reality devoid of practical understanding.”
“If anyone can present a case of someone achieving success in a shorter timeframe without adequate investment, I’d love to see it.”
