Adelaide United’s striker Luka Jovanovic experienced a rollercoaster of emotions after netting a decisive goal that propelled his side into the A-League semi-finals. His jubilation quickly turned to regret when he was issued a red card for removing his shirt in celebration, meaning he will be sidelined for the playoffs.
In a thrilling match against Melbourne City on Sunday, Jovanovic made a significant impact off the bench, scoring twice, with his late goal in the 98th minute also earning him a joint lead in the Golden Boot race alongside Auckland FC’s Sam Cosgrove.
Despite his valid excitement, Jovanovic’s shirt removal resulted in a second yellow card, having already been cautioned just a minute prior for his involvement in a heated confrontation.
The 20-year-old reflected on the incident, admitting he was unaware of his impending punishment during the celebration.
“I picked my shirt back up and started walking towards the halfway line,” he recounted to the Australian media.
“Then I heard the referee call my name and saw him brandishing a red card, and I thought: ‘Oh, my God’.
“I really wish I could participate in the next game, but I trust the boys to carry on without me.”
Jovanovic’s expulsion also caught Adelaide coach Airton Andrioli off guard.
“I didn’t even notice that he received a yellow card during that scuffle,” he admitted.
“Naturally, he’s feeling a bit down about it. We’re all a bit disappointed.
“But I’d take that scenario any day of the week—coming on and scoring two goals.”
