Morten Wieghorst has made the decision to step down from his role as assistant coach for the Danish national football team.
His contract is set to expire in June 2026 and will not be renewed, bringing to an end a six-year tenure as assistant coach first under Kasper Hjulmand and then Brian Riemer.
“I’ve been resolute about this choice for some time,” Morten Wieghorst shared with dr.dk.
“It’s unfortunate that I won’t be able to conclude my time with a final tournament, and many of us feel sorrow and disappointment about that, but that’s how things are.”
Following Kasper Hjulmand’s departure as head coach after the conclusion of the 2024 European Championship, Wieghorst was elevated to the role of interim head coach for the senior national team.
However, he had to take a leave of absence due to stress-related issues, leading to Lars Knudsen stepping into his position. Brian Riemer was subsequently appointed as the permanent head coach, and following Wieghorst’s recovery, he resumed his role as assistant coach.
Wieghorst has expressed that it has been an immense privilege to be part of the Danish men’s national team.
“I truly enjoy collaborating with the players; they are the most talented in Denmark. I appreciate working with the entire coaching staff. Our teamwork has been exceptional,” he stated.
“There’s a unique spirit surrounding the national team, and I’ve experienced nearly six fantastic years filled with wonderful moments—along with some disappointments—but predominantly great memories and accomplishments.”
