Kenya’s women’s national football team head coach, Beldine Odemba, expressed her admiration for the Harambee Starlets despite their 2-0 defeat to Australia in the final of the FIFA Series, held at Nyayo Stadium on Wednesday.
The East African squad entered the FIFA Series eager to challenge themselves against top-tier opposition and kicked off their campaign with a 2-0 victory over India, paving the way for the showdown with the Matildas, who had previously thrashed Malawi 5-0 in their opening match.
Although Kenya put up a commendable effort in the final, they were ultimately bested after Chelsea forward Sam Kerr scored the opening goal, followed by Clare Wheeler, who secured the victory for Australia.
Kenya had their share of opportunities but failed to convert them into goals. They appeared stronger in the early stages of the match, yet were thwarted by the impressive performance of goalkeeper Joe Montemurro, who played a crucial role in keeping Australia in contention.
Kenya’s WAFCON Aspirations
Utilising the FIFA Series as a preparatory platform, Kenya is gearing up for the forthcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) set to take place in Morocco, which will also serve as a qualifying event for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
“This was our first encounter with a team outside of Africa, and we’re delighted to have faced such a formidable opponent. The players gave their all, and although we created several opportunities, it’s clear we must improve our finishing,” remarked Odemba.
She further emphasised: “Our mantra going forward is simple: one chance, one goal.”
Odemba elaborated on the benefits of the FIFA Series for Kenya’s future: “As a coach and as part of the technical team, we have great confidence in our squad. We intend to head to WAFCON and deliver strong performances.”
“The FIFA Series has provided us with key insights into our current standing, revealing areas that require focus, and I am genuinely proud of the girls’ efforts. We’re feeling optimistic heading into WAFCON.”
In conclusion, Odemba stated: “I’m thoroughly impressed with every player, not just the defenders but the entire squad. They worked cohesively and demonstrated their best abilities, making us feel prepared for WAFCON.”
‘Kenya Proved a Tough Challenge’
Australia’s coach Joe Montemurro acknowledged Kenya’s strength, describing them as a well-organised team, and admitted the Starlets provided the intense competition they had hoped for during the FIFA Series.
“Kenya is indeed a strong team and very well structured. Our aim here was to adapt to the conditions and gain an understanding of African football dynamics, including any surprises that might arise. We got exactly what we wanted,” stated Montemurro.
He continued: “Kenya was a fantastic challenge; we were in search of a tough opponent, and that’s precisely why we participated. Learning from this experience is invaluable to our development.”
“While we missed several opportunities, that’s part and parcel of international football. We need to be ready for whatever comes our way,” Montemurro added.
Kerr, who was a significant draw, shared her enthusiasm for playing in Nairobi despite the challenging conditions. “The Kenyan people have been incredibly warm and welcoming, and I’m looking forward to giving back to them,” said Kerr.
“It was genuinely a pleasure for us to be here. The matches were tough, posed challenges we don’t typically encounter, but it’s been a valuable experience.”
The Harambee Starlets have been placed in Group C for WAFCON alongside hosts Morocco, Senegal, and Algeria in what is set to be a fiercely competitive group.
Kenya secured their WAFCON spot following a commanding two-legged victory over Gambia in the qualifiers, winning 3-1 in the first leg before sealing their progression with a 1-0 win in the second leg for a 4-1 aggregate score.
The 2026 edition will mark a significant return for the Harambee Starlets, as they compete in WAFCON a decade after their inaugural appearance in 2016.
