The CEO of Cricket NSW has refrained from definitively stating whether David Warner will continue as captain of the Sydney Thunder following his recent drink-driving charge.
CEO Lee Germon expressed that the governing body is “well-prepared” to take a leadership stance and highlighted their collaboration with Transport for NSW, which focuses on promoting road safety.
Warner was charged after allegedly registering a blood alcohol concentration of 0.104, which is more than double the legal limit.
The former Test opener is accused of drink driving in Maroubra on Easter Sunday and is scheduled to appear in court on 7 May.
“I can’t comment too much due to the legal aspects involved,” Germon stated to reporters in Sydney on Wednesday.

“The charges are certainly concerning, and we take them very seriously,” he added.
“At Cricket NSW, we strongly advocate for safe driving practices and do not endorse drink driving. We place a significant focus on educating our players in this area and will provide David with support throughout this process, particularly with the upcoming court case. We also aim to enhance our education efforts with all players.”
When pressed about Warner’s future as captain, Germon mentioned that a decision would be made in due course.
“That will be considered and remains to be seen,” he stated.
“Right now, these are allegations, and the future of the Sydney Thunder captaincy will be addressed in due time.”
Cricket NSW owns the Thunder and has a longstanding partnership with Transport for NSW.

“We are in close collaboration with Transport for NSW,” Germon stated.
“Transport for NSW has been a longstanding sponsor of ours and is a vital partner. We’re consulting with them regarding this situation, as we know they expect us to lead on this important issue, and we’re fully prepared to uphold that responsibility. It’s a partnership we value highly and wish to maintain.”
Cricket Australia previously enforced a lifetime leadership ban on Warner due to his involvement in the 2018 ball-tampering scandal in South Africa; however, this ban was lifted in October 2024, and he was appointed Thunder captain the following month.
Warner was reportedly caught drink driving during a brief return to Australia from his commitments with the Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League.
He retained the Karachi captaincy for a match on 9 April, but was dismissed for a golden duck and is currently managing a back injury.
