The Wellington Phoenix have announced that their record-holder for appearances, Mackenzie Barry, will be back for her sixth season.
Since the beginning of the women’s programme, Barry has been a steadfast presence in defence and has re-signed with the club for the upcoming 2026-27 Ninja A-League season.

The seasoned defender has started 91 out of the team’s 97 matches to date, including every one of their record-setting 20 games in the 2025-26 regular season.
At just 25, Barry has taken on a leadership role in the absence of club captain CJ Bott, who is expecting her first child this July.
Phoenix head coach Bev Priestman highlighted Barry’s vital role within the team, stating she embodies the club’s core values.
“Much of what you’ve seen from our team this season in terms of collective effort has been driven primarily by Mack in defence,” Priestman said.
“She is the ultimate professional—both a world-class defender and an outstanding person.”

“When I introduced new players into the squad this season, I wanted them to understand the significance of representing this city and country in the A-League, and there’s no one better than Mack to demonstrate that.
“Her training habits are top-notch. Whether it’s executing passing drills or a full-scale game, she maintains high standards and drives the team’s training culture.
“Mackenzie is also one of the toughest players I’ve ever encountered, battling through elements like mild hypothermia and sprained ankles this season. Her commitment to this club means the world to her.”
Mackenzie Barry expressed that extending her contract was a straightforward choice.
“This has definitely been the most enjoyable and successful season of my career,” said Barry.
“So, why would I want to leave? The Phoenix feels like home to me. It’s my first professional club. I was chosen, trusted, and given the opportunity to play consistently since I was 19.

Barry sees Wellington as the prime place to strive for selection in the Football Ferns squad for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 in Brazil.
“This is a significant aspiration for me. I missed the chance to play in the last World Cup held at home, and that was really disappointing. However, participating in the Olympics in France recently provided me with invaluable tournament experience, which was incredible. I am hopeful to be selected again.”
Mackenzie Barry is the fourth women’s player to re-sign with the Wellington Phoenix in recent weeks, bringing the total number of squad members confirmed for next season to 11.
