The Wellington Phoenix announced on Wednesday morning that Mackenzie Barry, the women’s team’s most capped player, will return for her sixth season.
Having been a steadfast presence in the defence since the team’s inaugural season, Barry has re-signed for the upcoming 2026-27 Ninja A-League campaign.

Barry has made a remarkable 91 starts out of a possible 97 matches in the club’s history, including every one of the record-setting 20 games in the 2025-26 regular season. She has also stepped up as a leader in the absence of club captain CJ Bott, who is expecting her first child in July.
Phoenix head coach Bev Priestman regards Barry as an integral part of the team’s core and believes she embodies the values of the club.
“This season, what you’ve witnessed on the pitch in terms of teamwork has been largely driven by Mack at the back,” Priestman remarked. “She is the consummate professional, a world-class defender and an exceptional individual.”

“When I brought in new players to this team this season, they needed to understand what it truly means to represent this city and country in the A-League. Nobody exemplifies that better than Mack,” Priestman continued.
“Her training habits are exemplary. Whether it’s executing a passing pattern or competing in a full XI versus XI match, she consistently elevates the training standards.
“Mack is one of the toughest players I’ve ever encountered, battling through mild hypothermia and rolled ankles, among other challenges this season. It means everything to her to play for this club.”
Mackenzie Barry expressed that extending her contract in the capital was a straightforward choice.
“This has undoubtedly been the most enjoyable and successful season of my career,” Barry stated.
“So, why would I want to leave? The Phoenix feels like home to me. This is my first professional club, and I was selected, trusted and given the opportunity to play consistently at 19.”

Barry is determined to position herself for selection in the Football Ferns squad for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 in Brazil.
“It’s a significant goal of mine. Missing out on the last World Cup at home was incredibly disappointing. However, participating in the Olympics in France provided me with valuable tournament experience, and it was amazing. I’m really hopeful to be selected again.”
Mackenzie Barry is the fourth female player to re-commit to the Wellington Phoenix in recent weeks, bringing the total to 11 squad members secured for next season.
