Pep Guardiola has emphasised that Manchester City must hold Arsenal in high regard as they prepare for a crucial title clash against the Premier League leaders next weekend.
City reduced the deficit to Arsenal to just six points following a commanding 3-0 victory at Chelsea on Sunday.
Second-half goals from Nico O’Reilly, Marc Guehi, and Jeremy Doku enabled City to take advantage of Arsenal’s unexpected 2-1 loss to Bournemouth a day prior.
With a game in hand on Arsenal, a win in their pivotal encounter at the Etihad Stadium on April 19 would shift the momentum dramatically in this exhilarating title race.
Having won six championships under Guardiola, City are finding their best form at a crucial stage, while Arsenal appears to be struggling under the pressure of vying for their first English league title since 2004.
However, Guardiola remains acutely aware of the challenges posed by Arsenal, despite their recent slump, which includes three defeats in their last four fixtures across all competitions—one of which was a 2-0 loss to City in the League Cup final.
“I have immense respect for Arsenal and what they have achieved over the past few years. I know their manager, the players, and the quality they bring to every match. That is our biggest challenge. We may need to adjust tactically,” Guardiola remarked.
“Currently, they have been the best team in the country and indeed in Europe. Winning against Arsenal once is incredibly tough; just think about defeating them twice in a matter of weeks. We need to be well-rested.”
“I want to remind my fans: show Arsenal the respect they deserve; they are an exceptional team. Join us from the very start, as the players will give their all.”
‘Exceptional’ Cherki
Guardiola feels that City was underestimated leading up to the League Cup final, a sentiment that his squad was able to convert into motivation.
Keen to maintain that edge, he added: “We are going to face a team that has lost only three out of 49 matches, and they haven’t been defeated in the Champions League this season.”
“In the League Cup final, we were seen as clear underdogs. Not one person in this country would have put a pound on us being the superior side.”
“It’s crucial to defeat Arsenal as we’re six points behind them. If they win, it’s virtually all over for us, and a draw isn’t an option either.”

Arsenal has previously surrendered significant leads to City in both the current and last year’s title races.
Worryingly for the Gunners, City is known for finding their stride as the season reaches its climax.
Historically, in the last five Premier League seasons, City has dropped points just once in their last ten matches, securing 32 victories out of 43 attempts since 2021/22.
This season, they have lost only once in their past 19 league outings and have gone unbeaten in nine matches.
“We are improving. Now that we are out of the Champions League, we have longer weeks to prepare. Everyone is fresh, and in training, all understand their role,” Guardiola explained.
A significant factor in City’s resurgence has been the exceptional form of Rayan Cherki.
The young French playmaker assisted O’Reilly’s first goal and delivered a magnificent pass for Guehi’s second.
With 10 assists in his debut season for City, Guardiola lauded Cherki, stating: “Rayan is an extraordinary talent.”
“At such a young age, he is making a considerable impact in the Premier League during his first season; he is already an exceptional player.”
“His desire to improve further bodes well for both City and himself.”
