Lyon broke their nine-match winless streak in competitive fixtures as they secured a 2-0 victory over Lorient at the Groupama Stadium.
Having initially appeared set to qualify for the UEFA Champions League (UCL), Lyon’s dismal form had seen them plummet to seventh place prior to kick-off. The clash against Lorient posed a significant challenge, especially considering Lorient had lost only two of their last 17 league encounters.
The first half unfolded as a tense contest, with neither team able to apply meaningful pressure on the other’s goal.
The home side created the first opportunity, as Roman Yaremchuk’s header sailed over the bar, while Afonso Moreira had a shot saved comfortably by Yvon Mvogo.
Lorient gradually found their footing, and as Dominik Greif held onto a shot from Jean-Victor Makengo, they came close to breaking the deadlock just before half-time. Bamba Dieng, unmarked following a cross from Noah Cadiou, found himself with a clear sight on goal, but Greif made a spectacular save to deny him and then reacted swiftly to gather Arthur Avom’s follow-up effort.
During the interval, Lyon’s head coach Paulo Fonseca opted for a triple substitution, introducing Orel Mangala, Endrick, and Corentin Tolisso, a decision that quickly paid off. Just three minutes into the second half, Lyon opened the scoring with Yaremchuk heading in Endrick’s cross into the lower corner for his first Ligue 1 goal.
Endrick played a key role in the second goal as well, making a driving run into the box that forced Mvogo into a save, with the ball falling kindly for Tolisso who nodded it home.
Lorient sought to respond, with Dieng sending a shot wide when through on Greif, and they had a penalty awarded only to see it overturned by VAR; Moreira had indeed fouled Dieng in the area, but the foul had occurred after he was first impeded by Panos Katseris.
Avom came close again, but Greif was on hand to tip his low shot behind for a corner, and ultimately, Lorient could not find a way back into the match.
In the end, Lyon secured all three points, moving within two points of third-placed Lille, as they chase their first UCL qualification since the 2019/20 season, when they reached the semi-finals.
On the other hand, a win for Lorient would have only kept their slim hopes for European qualification alive, and this defeat effectively extinguishes those ambitions.
