Pep Guardiola has emphasised the need for Manchester City to show respect towards Arsenal as they prepare to clash with the Premier League frontrunners in a pivotal title encounter next weekend.
After a convincing 3-0 victory over Chelsea on Sunday, City’s pursuit of Arsenal is now just six points behind.
Goals in the second half from Nico O’Reilly, Marc Guehi, and Jeremy Doku allowed City to take full advantage of Arsenal’s unexpected 2-1 loss to Bournemouth the previous day.
The defending champions have a game in hand on Arsenal, and a win in the highly anticipated fixture at the Etihad Stadium on April 19 could shift the momentum in this tightly contested title race.
Under Guardiola’s guidance, City, who have claimed the title six times, are hitting their stride at an opportune moment, while Arsenal seem to be feeling the heat as they chase their first English title since 2004.
Nevertheless, Guardiola is acutely aware of the danger that Arsenal present, despite their recent record of three losses in four games across all competitions, including a 2-0 defeat to City in the League Cup final.
“I hold a great deal of respect for Arsenal and what they have accomplished in recent years. I understand the manager, the players, and their quality, as well as how they compete under various circumstances—this understanding is crucial for us. There’s a tactical aspect we might need to adapt,” Guardiola stated.
“They have been the best team in this country, and in Europe, up until now. It’s incredibly challenging to defeat Arsenal once, let alone twice in a matter of weeks. We need to be prepared.”
“To my fans, I ask: show a lot of respect for Arsenal; they are an exceptional team. Join us in supporting the players from the very beginning because they will give their all.”
‘Exceptional’ Cherki
Guardiola believes his side went into the League Cup final underestimated, a sentiment that they were able to transform into motivation.
Keen to maintain that mindset, he added: “We are set to face a team that has only lost three out of 49 matches and hasn’t been beaten once in this season’s Champions League.”
“In the League Cup final, we were considered complete underdogs. There wasn’t a single person in this country who would have placed a bet on us performing better.”
“It is vital for us to defeat Arsenal as we trail them by six points. If they beat us, it’s over; a draw won’t be enough either.”

Arsenal has faltered in significant leads against City during the title race in both the 2023 and 2024 seasons.
For the Gunners, the autumn of the season is concerning, as City is known for excelling when it matters most.
In their final ten matches over the last five Premier League seasons since 2021/22, City has only lost once out of 43 games, winning 32.
They’ve suffered only one defeat in their past 19 league outings this season and are currently on a nine-match unbeaten streak.
“We are improving. With longer weeks ahead now that we’re out of the Champions League, we are fresher and everyone knows precisely what they need to do in training,” Guardiola remarked.
A key factor in City’s resurgence is the inspired form of Rayan Cherki.
The French midfielder provided the assist for O’Reilly’s opening goal and delivered a brilliant pass for Guehi’s second.
With ten assists in the league during his debut season with City, Guardiola praised him, saying: “Rayan is an exceptional talent.”
“At such a young age, his impact in the Premier League in his first season is remarkable. He has the ambition to improve further. This will benefit both City and him.”
