In a thrilling finish, Daniel Wilmering salvaged a 1-1 draw for league leaders Newcastle against Adelaide United with a last-gasp goal in the 94th minute.
Ryan White displayed exceptional leadership for his team, finding the back of the net in the 72nd minute to give Adelaide the upper hand. Despite having two other goals disallowed, the match turned dramatically as Wilmering found a way to equalise just before the final whistle.
This draw marked the second stalemate among the top four teams today, following Auckland’s draw with Melbourne Victory. Newcastle’s position at the summit is now extended to a three-point advantage, while Adelaide climbs to third, sitting one point clear of Melbourne Victory.
The first half passed quietly, but Newcastle nearly took the lead when Zach Clough manoeuvred in a packed penalty area, setting up Xavier Bertoncello. However, his shot clipped Ethan Alagic’s leg and struck the top of the near post, denying the home side a goal.
The Jets appeared to have scored after a lengthy debate on who would take a free kick in a dangerous position. Clayton Taylor made a quick dash into the box, receiving a cleverly lobbed ball and poking it home. Unfortunately for Newcastle, the referee interrupted play, insisting the free-kick be retaken as he hadn’t authorised the quick restart.
With 25 minutes left, both teams sent in fresh legs, which led to immediate scoring opportunities. Jonny Yull came closest for his side, cutting onto his left foot and sending a shot narrowly past the far post.
After a tense battle, the deadlock was finally broken when Clough set up Lachie Rose, whose effort was saved by Joshua Smits. Adelaide swiftly countered, with Anselmo making a sublime pass to Ryan White, who powered his way through Newcastle’s defence before sneaking the ball past James Delianov and into the net.
Just three minutes later, Adelaide seemed to have doubled their advantage when Alagic converted a pullback from Anselmo, but VAR intervened, ruling the goal out for a previous foul.
The visiting side continued to press, and when Yull found Anselmo again, he executed an audacious overhead kick, only for the linesman to flag offside, prompting disappointment before any celebrations could commence.
In a dramatic climax, Eli Adams unleashed a shot into the crowded penalty area, resulting in a deflection that led to an awkward save from Smits, which Wilmering capitalised on, scoring with his first goal of the season to earn a well-deserved point for Newcastle.
