The highly anticipated Kiwi Super Rugby Pacific derby between the Hurricanes and Blues delivered an emotional evening in Wellington on Saturday, particularly for Blues player Cameron Suafoa, who is battling a terminal illness.
To commemorate 30 years since the competition’s inaugural match between the two sides in Palmerston North, both teams donned retro-inspired jerseys.
In a heartfelt tribute, Blues players showcased either blonde hair or shaved heads in solidarity with Suafoa, following his heartbreaking cancer diagnosis.

The Hurricanes secured a comprehensive 42-19 victory, adding a bonus point to their tally and extending their lead at the summit of the table.
In a dazzling performance at No.12, Jordie Barrett emerged victorious in the sibling showdown against former Hurricanes star Beauden.
“I normally like being on the same team as Beaudy, but that’s the way it goes,” remarked Jordie.

“It wasn’t a matter of trying to outshine my brother. The Blues are a strong team and have had the upper hand on us lately. We’ve managed to secure a victory here at home; now we’ve got to aim for a win when we visit Auckland. Who knows, perhaps we’ll find ourselves facing them in a final,” Jordie added.
Blues captain Sam Darry sent a heartfelt message to Suafoa.
“I know he’ll be watching. I’m sorry we couldn’t pull it off for you tonight, but we are all behind you. We love you and will support you throughout this journey,” Darry expressed.
