Former Atlético Madrid forward Thomas Lemar netted a crucial equaliser as Girona, sitting in 12th place, managed to draw 1-1 with Real Madrid for the second time this season, further diminishing the home side’s aspirations for the LaLiga title.
Wearing a kit reminiscent of the 1991/92 season, Girona started on a bright note during LaLiga’s retro weekend, with Azzedine Ounahi forcing Andriy Lunin into a brilliant near-post save within the first 15 minutes.
Real Madrid, opting not to engage in the nostalgic atmosphere, sought to assert their dominance in the match with a couple of promising chances before the 30-minute mark.
Jude Bellingham, in his first start since January, narrowly missed the target with a stretch, immediately before Federico Valverde’s well-placed shot was expertly parried by the vigilant Paulo Gazzaniga.

However, the Girona keeper didn’t cover himself in glory as Valverde unleashed a long-range strike at the start of the second half.
Gazzaniga’s unorthodox effort to stop the Uruguayan’s curling shot saw it sail past his weak defences, much to the delight of the 70,885 supporters present.
Disappointment soon set in for those fans when Lemar found himself unmarked, netting Girona’s well-executed equaliser in the 62nd minute. The Frenchman had the time to strike from the edge of the box, sending a low shot through Eduardo Camavinga’s legs and past the helpless Lunin.
Following their equaliser, Girona posed a greater threat for a while, with each attack met by a chorus of frustrated whistles from the Bernabéu crowd acutely aware of the implications of dropping more points.
The situation worsened for Madrid when Kylian Mbappé’s late drive went straight into Gazzaniga’s hands, just moments after his appeal for a penalty was dismissed.
Álvaro Arbeloa’s team ultimately ran out of time in their pursuit of all three points, capping off a disappointing sequence that included back-to-back defeats against Mallorca and Bayern Munich, now aware that Barcelona could extend their lead to nine points in the title race.
