Former World Cup champion and coach of the German national team, Jurgen Klinsmann, issued a cautionary message to Norwegian national team manager, Stale Solbakken, on Thursday regarding the complexities of leading a squad during the upcoming FIFA World Cup this summer.
With extensive experience as both a player and a coach in major tournaments, Klinsmann has highlighted a particular challenge that Norway may face before the FIFA World Cup this summer.
The German football icon is currently in Norway to participate in a football conference at Ullevaal, the national arena. On Thursday, he cautioned coach Stale Solbakken that discontent among players in the World Cup squad could disrupt Norway’s campaign at this esteemed tournament.
“It’s crucial to maintain a positive atmosphere within the squad every single day. Even when players are having an off day, or if there are conflicts among the players or staff, or if the media starts stirring up trouble,” Klinsmann remarked, as reported by NRK.
“Managing these internal disputes and what people refer to as ‘man-management’ is a vital responsibility for a coach,” he added, providing a clear warning to Solbakken.
Having coached both Germany (2006) and the USA (2014) at the World Cup, Klinsmann emphasised the importance of ensuring all players within the squad feel valued.
Particularly challenging is the task of keeping those players who may not get on the pitch satisfied. The recent expansion of World Cup squads from 22 to 26 players has complicated this further, according to Klinsmann.
“I wasn’t in favour of the increase in squad sizes from 22 to 26 players. Allowing five substitutions instead of three during matches creates more complications,” he expressed.
“I would prefer to manage a squad of 22 or 23 players to avoid disappointing even more individuals. I’d rather bring in three players I trust will perform well, rather than two substitutes just to fill the last few minutes,” Klinsmann stated.
Norway is scheduled to take on Iraq in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup on 17 June.
