Mainz’s remarkable UEFA Conference League journey continued as they took a significant stride towards their first ever continental semi-final, gliding to a 2-0 triumph over RC Strasbourg in the first leg of their quarter-final showdown.
The hosts made a fantastic start and nearly found the net just 80 seconds in when Nelson Weiper shot wide of the near post, but the eager home crowd didn’t have to wait long to celebrate a breakthrough.
Kaishu Sano, who had scored only once in his previous 76 appearances for the club, picked up the ball near the halfway line, charged forward, evading several tackles before cutting in and launching a curling shot from 22 yards that deflected in and nestled in the top corner, courtesy of the post.
It was all Mainz in the first half, and only a stunning fingertip save from Mike Penders, diving to his left, kept Stefan Posch from making it two.
However, Mainz No. 4 was determined not to be denied with his next attempt, meeting the ensuing corner with a perfectly struck volley that sailed past the keeper.
A rare opportunity for Strasbourg saw Guela Doue’s clever flick rattle the roof of the net, but their defensive issues continued, with Paul Nebel’s follow-up attempt excellently blocked.
The second half followed the same pattern as Phillip Tietz unleashed a powerful drive that was pushed aside at the near post by Penders, who then denied Tietz again moments later, getting low to palm away a well-placed strike from just inside the area.
Strasbourg, having lost their last three visits to Germany without scoring, squandered a golden chance to get back into the match when Julio Enciso found himself in space just 10 yards out, only to send a weak effort straight at Daniel Batz.
This missed opportunity seemed to shift momentum towards the French side, as Valentin Barco hammered a ferocious shot against the post from close range, shortly followed by Diego Moreira’s similar attempt being thwarted.

However, Mainz emerged stronger, with three chances falling to Armindo Sieb. The first was saved magnificently by Penders, though the forward may rue his missed opportunities with the other two, as he dragged one wide and misjudged his timing for a back-post header that soared over the bar and was cleared.
Ultimately, Mainz sealed the win, marking their seventh consecutive home victory in European competition, moving them closer to the semi-finals ahead of next week’s return leg.
On the other hand, Gary O’Neil’s Strasbourg saw their 10-match unbeaten streak across all competitions come to an end, facing a challenging task in Alsace to reverse this result and progress.
