Mainz’s impressive UEFA Conference League journey took a significant turn as they secured a 2-0 win against RC Strasbourg in the first leg of their quarter-final encounter, pushing them closer to a maiden appearance in a continental semi-final.
The home side made a blistering start, nearly taking the lead just 80 seconds into the match when Nelson Weiper fired wide of the near post. However, the eager fans did not have to wait long for the breakthrough.
Kaishu Sano, who had found the net just once in his last 76 matches, seized the ball near the halfway line, advanced with determination, navigated through multiple challenges, before cutting inside and firing a curling 22-yard shot, which deflected off a defender and nestled into the top corner via the post.
It was all Mainz in the opening exchanges, with only a magnificent full-stretch save from Mike Penders, diving low to his left, denying Stefan Posch a second goal.
However, Mainz Number 4 was not to be denied again, connecting beautifully with the resulting corner and unleashing a stunning volley that soared past the keeper.
A rare opportunity for Strasbourg came when Guela Doue’s clever flick struck the roof of the net, but Mainz continued to dominate, with Paul Nebel’s subsequent effort being expertly blocked.
After the halftime break, Mainz maintained their attacking momentum as Phillip Tietz smashed a powerful shot, only for Penders to tip it away at the near post. He quickly denied Tietz again, getting low to divert an angled shot from inside the area out of danger.
Strasbourg, who had not scored during their previous three visits to Germany, squandered a golden chance to pull one back when Julio Enciso found himself unmarked just 10 yards from goal, only to direct a weak effort straight at Daniel Batz.
This moment appeared to shift the game’s momentum in Strasbourg’s favour, as Valentin Barco struck the post with a fierce shot from close range, soon followed by a similar attempt from Diego Moreira that was also kept out.

Nevertheless, Urs Fischer’s side rallied back with three clear chances falling to Armindo Sieb. Penders made a brilliant save from the first, but Sieb may lament missed opportunities with his other two attempts, pushing one wide and misjudging his leap for a back-post header that ended up being a simple clearance.
Ultimately, Mainz got the job done, claiming their seventh consecutive home victory in European competition, edging closer to the semi-finals ahead of the return leg next week.
On the flip side, Gary O’Neil’s Strasbourg saw their impressive 10-match unbeaten streak across all tournaments come to an end, leaving them with a challenging task in Alsace to turn the tie around and advance.
