The injury to Stephen Crichton could be the opening Bronson Xerri needs for a return to first-grade footy; however, uncertainty remains regarding Xerri’s long-term prospects at the Bulldogs.
After being left out of the Bulldogs’ initial starting squad following the opening round, coach Cameron Ciraldo chose Enari Tuala as a preferred option in the centres.
Though Xerri was called up from the NSW Cup to sit on the bench for Canterbury’s Good Friday match against South Sydney, he did not get any game time following Crichton’s unfortunate injury.
The 25-year-old has a crucial four weeks ahead to showcase his skills and secure his place in the top squad as the Bulldogs look to navigate their campaign without their captain, who is out with a shoulder issue.
Crichton’s injury will be evaluated on a weekly basis to assess his recovery timeline, but Ciraldo suggested that all indications are positive so far.

Ciraldo anticipates that the 25-year-old will be fit for the State of Origin opener at Accor Stadium on May 27.
“I believe he’ll be ready for Origin,” Ciraldo commented.
“However, the injury does require healing. Fortunately, he has been making good progress thus far.”

Although the season has had its ups and downs for Ciraldo’s squad, he is pleased to see how his players, particularly Xerri, have reacted to past criticisms.
While Xerri’s request for a release after being dropped isn’t the first of its kind, he has capitalised on this opportunity to rejuvenate his career.
“It’s the way he has thrown himself into his training that truly impressed me,” Ciraldo remarked when discussing Xerri’s return to the side this week.

“He’s not the first to react poorly and then have his comments reported in the media. What matters is how he has conducted himself since then.
“His commitment to training and preparation have shown us the positive signs we want to see.”
As for whether Xerri’s return to the starting side signifies a long-term stay with the Bulldogs, Ciraldo remained tight-lipped.
“There’s no need to look too far ahead right now,” he stated.
“He’s eager for the chance he has coming up tomorrow night and is focusing on preparing to give it his all.
“He shares great camaraderie with his teammates, and he loves representing them.
“Every player goes through rough patches, but his recent response has been impressive.”
