Virgil Van Dijk has extended his apologies to Liverpool supporters, acknowledging that the team’s performance surrendered during their FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Manchester City.
Arne Slot’s men suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, with Van Dijk expressing his frustration over their lackluster second-half showing.
Having already been down 2-0 at the break due to Erling Haaland’s two goals, Liverpool conceded once more immediately after the restart, with Antoine Semenyo finding the net before Haaland completed his hat-trick.
The team’s disappointing performance led to a mass walkout by their 8,000 fans well before the final whistle.
Van Dijk owned up to his mistake in conceding a penalty which Haaland converted in the first half, stating that his team-mates also need to shoulder responsibility.
“I can only apologise to the fans for what we displayed, particularly in the second half,” he remarked.
“Naturally, you come out of the dressing room with the best intentions, hoping to score quickly to make it 2-1 and turn the game around.
“But the opposite occurred, and coming back from 3-0 here is extremely challenging – however, we should not have given up, and that’s possibly what happened at some point.”
“We let our fans down, we let ourselves down, and we let the manager down. The manner in which we played in the second half should sting for everyone. It certainly hurts me.”
This disappointing outcome has tightened the screws on Slot, as the team prepares for a challenging Champions League quarter-final first leg against Paris Saint-Germain in France on Wednesday.
With their aspirations for domestic silverware dashed by City, Liverpool are now left to focus on winning the Champions League and securing a spot in the following season’s tournament.
Van Dijk encouraged his squad to maintain unity as the pressure mounts, stating: “It’s a collective responsibility, isn’t it? Of course, the manager is accountable, but it’s us on the pitch who have to deliver.”
“The reality is that PSG are waiting for us. I watched them play on Friday, and it’s going to be yet another tough match. We need to be mentally prepared as quickly as possible.”
“I’ve been fortunate to represent Liverpool for many years, and the key factor has always been our togetherness. We are currently undergoing a bit of a transition, but we need to rediscover that.”
As Liverpool gears up for a vital Premier League encounter with Fulham between their matches against PSG, Van Dijk seeks a stronger performance from his team in the upcoming three fixtures.
“We owe it to ourselves and, especially, to the fans. If we want to salvage something from this season, we must strive to create something special in the next three games,” he insisted.
“I’m considering how we can turn this around. We’ve been dealing with this for nearly 75 percent of the season.”
“It’s a tough situation to accept, and everyone needs to reflect on their own contributions.”
