Authorities in Dresden have launched a criminal probe following a match in Germany’s second-tier football league between Dynamo Dresden and Hertha Berlin, where fans from both clubs burst onto the pitch.
The chaos erupted early during the match on Saturday, with the ongoing use of flares in both the home and away supporter sections, according to a statement from the police.
“As part of the investigation, Dresden police have commenced over a dozen inquiries into disturbances of the peace, infliction of bodily harm, damage to property, abuse, and ticket fraud,” the statement outlined.
Dynamo Dresden expressed deep concern regarding the incidents that occurred at the Rudolf Harbig Stadion, with finance director Stephan Zimmermann extending apologies to fans who were not involved.
“Our home matches have gained recognition for their vibrant atmosphere. The scenes we witnessed this evening are intolerable and severely harm not just our club, but the reputation of football across Germany,” he stated in a comment made on Sunday.
Hertha Berlin emerged victorious from the clash, winning 1-0 following an 80th-minute strike by Marten Winkler, positioning the capital club sixth in the Bundesliga 2 rankings while Dynamo Dresden sits in 15th place.
