PSV captain Jerdy Schouten has been sidelined for the remainder of the season and will miss the upcoming FIFA World Cup following a serious knee injury sustained during Saturday’s match against FC Utrecht, the club has announced.
The 29-year-old Schouten twisted his knee during the second half of PSV’s 4-3 victory, collapsing to the turf in visible pain and clutching his knee. He was promptly taken off the field on a stretcher.
Subsequent medical examinations have revealed that Schouten has endured a serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, which will necessitate surgery, the club confirmed on Sunday.
“When it happened, I knew straight away that something wasn’t right,” Schouten remarked in a statement on the club’s website.
“You still hold onto a glimmer of hope that it might not be as serious as it appears, but unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. It’s a massive setback for me, but I’m determined to recover swiftly. There are exciting times ahead for PSV, and I will do everything possible to be part of that journey.”
Schouten’s injury will keep him out for the entirety of the 2025/26 season and the upcoming FIFA World Cup, set to take place in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. He has been a key player for the Netherlands national team, starting in every match at the 2024 Euros in Germany.
