Cincinnati striker Kevin Denkey made a remarkable impact on Saturday, netting two goals, which included a spectacular bicycle kick, as the Ohio side triumphed over Sporting Kansas City with a scoreline of 2-1 in Major League Soccer.
The 24-year-old forward from Togo joined Cincinnati in January for a club-record fee exceeding $16 million from Belgian outfit Cercle Brugge, and he demonstrated just why he is highly regarded with his brilliant effort.
After Kansas City failed to successfully clear a corner, Luca Orellano delivered a cross into a packed area, where Denkey leapt majestically to volley the ball home, extending his team’s lead to 2-0 in the 78th minute.
Denkey had already opened the scoring in the 43rd minute, capitalising on a rebound after John Pulskamp parried Lukas Engel’s left-footed attempt.
Although KC managed to pull one back with an impressive strike from Zorhan Bassong in the 89th minute, Cincinnati held firm to secure all three points.
“There are not many words to describe what he did,” FC Cincinnati’s head coach Pat Noonan expressed to journalists regarding Denkey’s extraordinary goal.
“It was one of the best goals I’ve seen live, without a doubt.”
Cincinnati’s seventh victory in ten matches has propelled them to the summit of the Eastern Conference standings as they awaited the outcomes of Saturday’s later fixtures. Denkey remarked that the team’s hard work is finally paying off.
“It’s incredible. We’ve always believed we’re a competitive team. The key is the hard work, focus, and the winning mindset we bring onto the pitch every match,” Denkey shared with Apple TV.
Currently, the Philadelphia Union sit in second place, trailing Cincinnati by three points after a dominant 3-0 win over D.C. United.
Norwegian defender Jakob Glesnes kicked things off with a volley in the 15th minute, before midfielder Danley Jean-Jacques added a second with a strong finish shortly after halftime.
Substitute Bruno Damiani then rounded off the scoring with a well-executed individual effort in the 77th minute.
In other fixtures, Noah Eile headed in from a corner, securing a 1-0 victory for the New York Red Bulls against Montreal, while a penalty from Alonso Martinez earned New York City FC a 1-0 win over Toronto.
Later on Saturday, Orlando City will face off against Atlanta United, whereas in-form Charlotte will take on the New England Revolution.
In the Western Conference, newcomers San Diego FC are set to host Real Salt Lake, and a Texas derby will see Houston take on Austin.
Inter Miami is scheduled to meet FC Dallas on Sunday.
