Pep Guardiola has revealed that saying goodbye to Kevin De Bruyne has been one of the toughest moments during his tenure at Manchester City.
The Belgian midfielder is set to depart from City at the conclusion of the season when his contract expires, following Guardiola’s decision not to provide him with a new agreement.
This week, the 33-year-old expressed his disappointment at not receiving an extension to his decade-long association with the club.
De Bruyne has faced a series of debilitating injuries over the past two years, which have severely limited his match time and diminished his impact upon his return.
He joins an increasing number of City legends who have moved on in recent years, including notable figures such as Yaya Toure, Sergio Aguero, Fernandinho, David Silva, and Vincent Kompany.
Nevertheless, bidding farewell to the influential De Bruyne will undoubtedly be one of Guardiola’s most heartfelt goodbyes.
“I have experienced a lot with them, many good moments as well as some really tough times,” Guardiola reflected.
“Sergio, David Silva, and countless other players – we could make a long, long list even with just nine years here.
“Many players come and go, but once they leave, they remain a part of my life. It’s impossible not to feel that connection. It really is difficult.
“I completely understand the feelings that he (Kevin) has. It’s only natural. Personally, I wish him and his family nothing but the best.”
De Bruyne stands as one of the most decorated players in the club’s history, boasting 16 trophies, including six Premier League titles and the Champions League.
This Sunday, he will look to advance towards a third FA Cup when City takes on Nottingham Forest in the semi-finals at Wembley.
Securing the FA Cup and assisting City in qualifying for the Champions League after a challenging season would provide a fitting farewell for De Bruyne.
“That would certainly be wonderful. He has conducted himself outstandingly throughout these years and, even last month, since announcing that he is in the final months here at Manchester City, he has been exceptional. That will continue until the very end,” Guardiola remarked.
“He has trained exceptionally well, and his skills and talents continue to help us. I know he wants nothing but the best for the club.”
