The rare grin that Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou donned four days earlier in Frankfurt was soon replaced by his more customary scowl following a disappointing 2-1 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest, marking the club’s 18th loss in the Premier League this season.
Spurs found themselves trailing 2-0 within the first 16 minutes. Despite dominating possession and creating chances after that, they could only muster a late goal from Richarlison, further contributing to a season that might just become the worst for Tottenham in terms of points since they recorded a mere 44 in the 1997-98 campaign.
As they face a challenging run-in, including a visit to potential champions Liverpool next weekend, Spurs currently sit in 16th place with 37 points. They have only the teams in the relegation zone behind them in terms of defeats.
However, their 1-0 victory against Eintracht Frankfurt, which secured a spot in the Europa League semi-finals, has kept hopes alive, and Postecoglou remains optimistic that he can fulfil his promise of bringing home a trophy in his second season at each club he manages.
Yet, with this latest league loss—his eighth at home this season—the pressure mounts on the 59-year-old former Celtic manager.

“It’s another match we’ve lost where we simply shouldn’t have, and this has been a significant theme in our season as we continue to make things unnecessarily complicated for ourselves during critical moments,” Postecoglou stated to the media.
“We’ve conceded some careless goals. It’s disappointing because our performance was exceptional and we completely controlled the game. Even with the two goals we gave away, I still believe we deserved to win. Nonetheless, it’s yet another loss, and one that’s utterly unacceptable.”
“This season, despite the hurdles we’ve encountered, has been frustrating because the quality of our football has been impressive. We’ve dropped another match.”
Supporters expressed their displeasure at half-time, yet the atmosphere was somewhat kinder by full-time after a thrilling conclusion where Tottenham managed to pressure the Champions League contenders, Nottingham Forest.
“I don’t feel the need to say anything to the supporters. They are understandably disappointed and upset, just as we are,” Postecoglou explained.
“The fans are understandably unhappy with the results, but so are I and the players. We must accept responsibility for not living up to the standards we ought to maintain.”
“Conversely, the frustrating aspect is that it’s not due to our style of play; today, our performance mirrored that of the home game against Frankfurt, which was another match we should have won.”
