In a one-on-one with Flashscore, prominent football agent Vadim Shablii reveals ProStar’s strategic direction, discusses key transfers entailing Ukrainian talents, and offers a glimpse into the agency’s ambitious aspirations for the future of Ukrainian football.
As the founder of the well-respected ProStar Football Agency, Shablii outlined the mission of his agency. Established in Ukraine and now based in London, ProStar focuses on identifying, developing, and representing elite football talents throughout Europe.
Since its inception, ProStar has rapidly ascended the ranks of the world’s leading football agencies, earning acclaim for its ability to scout, nurture, and promote young talent in competitive leagues such as the English Premier League and Italian Serie A.
Shablii’s vision has fostered a reliable network within the football community, significantly enhancing the global standing of Ukrainian footballers.
ProStar currently showcases several notable players, including Vitalii Mykolenko (Everton), Yehor Yarmolyuk (Brentford), and the rising star Georgiy Sudakov from Shakhtar Donetsk, who is attracting attention from top clubs in the Premier League and Serie A. Additionally, the agency represents Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk, but comments on his situation cannot be provided due to its delicate nature. Collectively, these players hold a market value exceeding 100 million euros.
Vadim has bravely challenged the odds through unwavering determination and tenacity, poised to enhance the accomplishments and undertakings of his agency in the upcoming transfer windows.
The agency’s success was evident when it ranked fifth globally for the most football deals completed between July and September 2024, trailing only behind industry giants like Wasserman, CAA Stellar, CAA Base, and Unique Sports Group, while surpassing other leading agencies like SEG.
Shablii also discussed his own journey from player to agent, the meticulous management of high-profile clients, the winter transfer window, and ProStar’s growing influence within key football markets.
Shablii stated, “Thank you for your interest in my activities and the work of ProStar Football Agency as a whole. Football has been a significant part of my life from a young age. As a player, I realised by the time I was around 21 that I did not possess the qualities to excel at the highest levels, and I didn’t wish to settle for mediocrity.
“Still, leaving football entirely was not an option. I’ve always aimed high and approached my goals with seriousness. I realised during my playing days that I often assisted my football friends by recommending them to teams where I had connections, which led me to pursue the agency path on a professional level, despite the fierce competition in this aspect of the football market.”
ProStar boasts several leading Ukrainian players in the Premier League. How do you define ProStar’s mission in promoting Ukrainian talent?
“As a football agency, we believe every player deserves the best opportunity for their growth, irrespective of nationality. Concerning our Ukrainian football talents, our mission is to elevate their value in the European football scene to match that of players from leading leagues. I’m pleased to see a recent shift in this attitude, with more players holding Ukrainian passports featured at top clubs.
“Many of our clients are young talents who are eagerly waiting for their moment to shine and capture the attention of scouts across Europe. For example, you may recall that our goalkeeper Vladyslav Krapyvtsov recently joined Spanish Girona’s first team this winter, a move made possible by his talent and perseverance.
“Similarly, another emerging player is Artem Smolyakov, a member of the Ukrainian U21 team and one of our country’s leading young defenders (left-back), who recently transferred from FC Polissya of UPL to the esteemed MLS side, Los Angeles FC.
“We take great pride in these accomplishments for both the players and the agency as we continuously broaden our influence and enhance our partnerships with clubs worldwide. (Editor’s note: more details on the winter transfer window can be found below).”
One of your key players, Vitalii Mykolenko, is currently thriving under David Moyes at Everton. What guidance do you provide him regarding career decisions and potential future transfers? Is now the time for him to take the next step?
“Vitalii has surpassed 100 appearances in the Premier League, and over 114 across all competitions for Everton (at the time of this interview). He continually develops and proves to be a vital player for the team.
“I can confidently say he is a well-rounded and established player, possessing a strong character and approach to the game, with valuable experience against formidable opponents. I believe he stands a great chance to advance his career at another top club in the future.”
Under the wing
Yehor Yarmoliuk, another young talent under your guidance at Brentford, is making waves. What differentiates him as a prospect in English football, and how has he adapted to the Premier League and life in England?
“Yehor is a special talent, and I am thrilled to have him as a client. Just recently, we renewed our contract with him, signifying his importance to us. It means a lot when young, promising players choose ProStar over various other options. We ensure every player is placed in a club that aligns with their career goals.
“Yehor began his journey at SC Dnipro-1, where he trained with the first team at just 14, moving to the Premier League at 18. His style is a perfect fit for Brentford; he is resilient, technically adept, and excels in pressing opponents, leaving everything on the pitch. He has undoubtedly strengthened Brentford and is well-positioned for further development there.
“From day one, the club’s management, head coach, and staff have supported Yehor, viewing him as a pivotal project. They are dedicated to his growth and development as a key player in their starting XI.”
Another potential superstar is Giorgi Sudakov, who is generating considerable interest with several Premier League clubs, including Manchester City, reportedly keen on his services as confirmed by Shakhtar’s general director, Sergiy Palkin. Can you elaborate on this?
“Firstly, I must mention that all our players are stars. Some are already performing at the highest European levels while others are en route to achieving that standard.
“Giorgi is eager to test himself at one of Europe’s top clubs. We remain open to offers, and when the right opportunity arises, I am confident he will be welcomed by a prestigious club. Both Premier League and Serie A teams have expressed longstanding interest.
Are there specific Premier League clubs that you believe would be particularly well-suited to his abilities and career ambitions? For instance, could Pep Guardiola or Mikel Arteta serve as ideal mentors for him?
“For Sudakov, and any player, it is crucial to feel supported and trusted by the coach; certainly, such reputable managers could offer the guidance he needs. Many players aspire to play under their leadership, as they are exceptional in their dedication to each match.”
Last summer, Napoli and Juventus showed an interest. In the current market, do you anticipate renewed attempts from Serie A clubs, or has the focus shifted entirely to the Premier League?
“Giorgi would relish the opportunity to play in Serie A. We have received official offers from clubs in this league, but for a transfer to be successful, all parties involved must be satisfied with the terms and provide their endorsement.”
Moving abroad
How does Sudakov currently perceive his potential move to England? Has his mindset or preferred destination changed since the winter transfer window? If he were to join the Premier League, would you expect him to make an immediate impact, or would he require time to adjust?
“At present, the transfer window for clubs interested in him, notably teams from the top five leagues, is closed. Giorgi remains contracted with Shakhtar and is committed to contributing his best to his current club. He is a diligent and insightful footballer, and I have no doubt we will soon see him donning the colours of one of Europe’s top teams.
“Regarding your second question, adaptation is a natural process for players transitioning not only to a new club but to a different league as well. Everything changes in your life, making it essential to find synergy with the new team and the coach’s requirements.
“Much depends on the team environment and the support provided by the head coach to the newcomer. Some players adjust rapidly, while others may need more time. It’s highly individualistic. However, as agents, we are always prepared to assist and guide our players in settling into their new roles, allowing them to focus solely on football and their new team.”
Winter transfer window
ProStar has made several exciting signings this winter, further solidifying its commitment to promoting Ukrainian talent across leading leagues. Key transfers include moves to Girona FC, Trabzonspor, Los Angeles FC, FC Eyupspor, and Empoli FC, marking significant progress for the agency’s expanding roster.
VLADYSLAV KRAPYVTSOV (Free agent → Girona FC, contract until summer 2029):
Vadim, your agency has completed several transfers during the winter window. What main factors influenced Krapyvtsov’s choice to sign with Girona, and how do you see his style of play integrating with the club’s system in La Liga?
“We all aimed for Vladyslav to continue his career in a top European league. Upon making that decision, we worked diligently to ensure he flourished in a club that needed him.
“He underwent an extensive trial with Premier League heavyweights Chelsea and Arsenal, with both clubs expressing interest. Unfortunately, regulatory constraints stymied those moves. We firmly believe Girona is the ideal setting for Vladyslav to advance his career.
“Now at 19 years, he is Girona’s second-choice goalkeeper, and the club is keen on Vladyslav’s growth. Michel (Girona’s manager, editor’s note) has declared that Krapyvtsov is crucial to the club’s future. We eagerly anticipate his first-team debut.
“Vladyslav possesses all the requisite qualities for development and competing at a high level. He has excellent physical attributes for a goalkeeper, impressive reflexes, and adept footwork—all essential traits for top goalkeepers.”
OLEKSANDR ZUBKOV (Shakhtar) & DANYLO SIKAN (Shakhtar) – Both signed for Trabzonspor:
Let’s discuss other transfers. Trabzonspor has secured two Ukrainian talents from Shakhtar with long-term agreements (4.5 years for Zubkov and until June 2029 for Sikan). What does this dual signing suggest about Trabzonspor’s scouting approach and long-term vision concerning Ukrainian talent?
“The duration of Zubkov and Sikan’s contracts implies that Trabzonspor anticipates the gradual development of these players and seeks to integrate them into the squad for an extended period. The club is investing in the future and recognizes the potential in Ukrainian footballers. This move will positively influence the players’ performances for the national team as well.
“The Turkish Super Lig is a highly competitive championship. It provides an excellent opportunity for them to demonstrate and evolve their football qualities, benefiting their international appearances. Overall, their growth at Trabzonspor could pique the interest of even bigger European clubs down the line.”
What unique strengths do these players bring to the Turkish Super Lig, and how will their extended contracts aid in their integration into Trabzonspor’s playing style?
“This is primarily a question for Trabzonspor’s head coach, regarding how they will see these players fitting into the team. I can disclose that Danylo Sikan is a formidable striker with a keen instinct for goal-scoring opportunities.
“Oleksandr Zubkov is a versatile attacking midfielder capable of effectively playing both on the wing and through the centre. His creativity, excellent field vision, and timely passing make him an asset. Both players possess the essential attributes to firmly establish themselves within Trabzonspor’s starting XI.”
VIKTOR KOVALENKO (Free agent → Empoli FC – returning to a former club):
Viktor Kovalenko’s return to Empoli represents a homecoming of sorts. What motivated this decision, and how could his past experiences with the club shape his forthcoming contributions?
“Empoli is a familiar environment for Kovalenko, where he previously played and fit in well. Understanding the team and its style of play will streamline his adaptation and accelerate his integration into the squad. Viktor is highly motivated and eager to re-enter top-level football.”
ARTEM SMOLYAKOV (FC Polissya Zhytomyr → Los Angeles FC, long-term contract of 4+1 years):
Artem Smolyakov’s transfer to Los Angeles FC is somewhat atypical, as young talents typically move to European leagues first. How do you see his transition to MLS, and what role do you expect him to play as he adjusts to a new football culture? Is the US market likely to become more appealing for young European players?
“It’s common to associate MLS with later-career transfers of experienced players. However, MLS is increasingly becoming attractive for both players and fans, thanks to the allure of renowned European stars.
“I am confident that LAFC, being one of the finest clubs in MLS, will facilitate Artem’s growth and allow him to showcase his potential on the international stage. The MLS competencies, coupled with its unique schedule, require some adjustment, yet I believe Artem will integrate swiftly with his dedication and attitude towards football.
“Also, I want to emphasise the transaction itself. Timely and profitable acquisitions, followed by strategic transfers to other leading leagues, represent the future of football. Hence, I’m grateful to FC Polissiya’s President, Gennadiy Butkevych, for approving this deal.
“As an agency, we firmly support clubs that believe in nurturing young players, providing them with the platform to demonstrate their capabilities while also being open to facilitating their development, offered it is favourable for everyone involved.”
Vadim on other talented Ukrainian players
Besides Giorgi Sudakov, ProStar represents various other top talents in Ukraine’s Premier League. Who do you foresee as the next big names to watch? Could it be talents like Artem Bondarenko and Volodymyr Brazhko, or others? What distinguishes them?
“Artem Bondarenko and Volodymyr Brazhko are players who possess significant potential for growth and progression. They are drawing interest from various European clubs, along with Vladyslav Vanat, for instance.
“This young generation of talented footballers exhibits impressive technique and tactical acumen, strong physical attributes, and the necessary qualities for success at the highest levels.”
Volodymyr Brazhko was recently linked to clubs such as Betis, Girona, and Feyenoord. What factors would influence Dynamo Kyiv’s choice to release him, and which league do you believe best matches his style?
“Brazhko is a flexible player capable of adapting to numerous playing styles, proving himself in various leagues. However, he is not merely a key player for Dynamo; he has emerged from their academy and remains integral to their goals of clinching the Ukrainian Premier League title this season.
“This is why his contract with Dynamo was extended until 2029. Nonetheless, I am confident that Europe’s top football clubs will maintain strong interest in Volodymyr in the forthcoming summer transfer window.”
Dynamo Kyiv notably developed Andriy Shevchenko, one of football’s all-time great strikers. Do you believe 22-year-old Vladyslav Vanat from Dynamo Kyiv has the potential to mirror Shevchenko’s success? His statistics are impressive – 14 goals and 7 assists in the 2023/24 season. What attributes position him as potentially reaching Shevchenko’s level?
Shablii: “Absolutely. Vladyslav Vanat was the top scorer in last season’s UPL and is again leading the charts with 12 goals in 19 matches (at the time of the interview).
“I wouldn’t directly compare him to Andriy Shevchenko, a global icon, as each player carries their unique talent, especially given the dynamic changes in football in recent years.
“Football has now evolved into a battle of tactics, endurance, and speed of decision-making. Nonetheless, Vladyslav consistently delivers high-quality performances.
“He possesses strong tactical awareness and game understanding, aiding him in scoring consistently in the Championship. Demonstrating efficiency at a young age bodes well. If he maintains his current trajectory, he stands every chance of becoming a remarkably strong striker.”
With speculation surrounding interest from Serie A clubs like Inter Milan and Lazio, do you envision Vladyslav Vanat potentially following in Shevchenko’s footsteps to Italy, or do you think his game is more aligned with the pace and physicality of the Premier League?
“Adaptability is increasingly vital in football. Thus, younger players generally find it easier to adjust to a club’s playing style. Vanat can effectively perform in both Serie A and the Premier League.
“His transition to either league will hinge on which club presents the best opportunities for his growth and potential fulfilment. Additionally, the club’s condition must align with the transfer requirements set by his current team, Dynamo Kyiv.”
About ProStar’s vision and future
How does ProStar maintain close associations with Premier League clubs, and how crucial is this for future transfers?
Shablii: “Our footballers currently play for some of the finest Premier League clubs, and our goal is to continue and expand this collaboration. I would also like to add that our players frequently participate in trials with Premier League teams, which is a promising trend.
“The Premier League is a serious league – it serves as a global stage consistently drawing attention from clubs and scouts. It’s an honour for us to collaborate with such esteemed organisations.”
What are your expectations for ProStar in the coming years in terms of talent representation and market expansion? Shakhtar Donetsk has established a reputation for recruiting Brazilian talent to their roster, significantly influencing the league’s quality and international appeal. Do you have any intentions to broaden ProStar’s reach to Brazil, considering its vast talent pool, and do you plan to bring more young Brazilian players to Ukraine or other European leagues?
“The transfer policy and development strategies differ between club operations and football agency organisation. Shakhtar has experienced great success with Brazilian players. This talent market is rich, yet it has undergone significant shifts and player costs have also increased. This operates as its unique ecosystem.
“Numerous talented individuals from South America aim to transition to Brazilian Serie A, enhancing their visibility among top scouts. We have agents focusing on the Brazilian football market, making strides to expand our footprint in this region. Our agents in Brazil are fluent in Portuguese and offer insight into the culture of the players from those regions. Establishing solid negotiations while understanding players’ needs and cultural values is vital.
“Generally, football agencies operate in distinct manners; some concentrate on specific markets, aiming to excel therein, while others, conversely, prefer maintaining representation across various countries without having a large player pool in each. Our ProStar team seeks to heighten visibility and significance at a European level, demonstrating our competency and reliability while forging trust within new football markets among clubs and players.”
