The Mole: Jillaroos Star’s Remarkable Path to Vegas Following Family Tragedy at ‘Rock Bottom’

Star of the Jillaroos, Sarah Togatuki, has made a heartfelt gesture by using her rugby contract earnings to purchase a home for her parents, dedicating the achievement to her deceased brother.

Growing up in a housing commission home in Sydney’s western suburbs, Togatuki and her family faced numerous challenges.

However, her fortunes transformed dramatically through rugby league, and she shared her family’s tough journey as the Jillaroos prepare for their upcoming match against England in Las Vegas on Sunday afternoon (AEDT).

“It was quite challenging growing up,” Togatuki reflected.

“We really hit a low point after my brother Junior took his own life; it tore our family apart.

“My mum continues to grieve for him daily. However, his loss wasn’t in vain. He wanted better for our parents, and I have made it my mission to fulfil his dream.

“Now we all reside together in Shalvey – Mum, Dad, my three siblings, and my parents have also adopted four kids from Samoa to provide them with greater opportunities.”

Togatuki grew up alongside NRL legends Brian To’o and Stephen Crichton, who played a pivotal role in her journey.

“Since I was a child, they inspired me to play league, and I can’t express my gratitude enough,” she said. “Their support has meant the world to me.”

Togatuki, who hails from New Zealand and has Samoan roots, had the option to represent either nation.

“I opted for Australia as this country has treated me exceptionally well,” she noted.

“My parents are proud of my decision, and it has given me the opportunity to play in Vegas on a global stage – it’s going to be incredible.

“This is reportedly the first women’s professional game in the USA, which makes it all the more special – we aim to deliver an exceptional performance for the audience.”
