Motorsport Australia is thrilled to announce the revival of the esteemed Gold Star Award, now backed by the Australian Motorsport Racing Commission (AMRC) and V8 Sleuth.
This prestigious award seeks to honour the finest circuit driver in Australia each calendar year, utilising a newly developed four-tiered points system that acknowledges achievements across national and international motorsport disciplines.
“The Gold Star Award represents a significant acknowledgment of excellence in Australian motorsport. Its reinstatement not only pays tribute to our current champions but also serves as an inspiration for the next generation of drivers aiming for success on the world stage,” commented Lisa Crampton, Sporting & Technical Director of Motorsport Australia.
The award will implement a detailed tiered points system designed to assess driver performances. This modern approach guarantees fairness and inclusivity among a variety of motorsport categories, showcasing the rich diversity of contemporary racing.
A New Era of Recognition: The Tiered Points System
The Gold Star Award will employ a structured four-tiered points system:
- Tier 1: Formula 1, World Endurance Championship (WEC), IndyCar.
- Tier 2: Supercars, NASCAR, Formula 2, Porsche Supercup, Formula E, IMSA.
- Tier 3: National GT, Carrera Cup, National TCR, Formula 3, Australian Formula 4.
- Tier 4: Other National Formula 4 categories.
Points will be distributed based on finishing positions within each series, with additional base points granted for participation. Drivers will earn participation points only for their highest-ranking category, contingent on achieving a top-10 finish. Moreover, bonus points will be awarded for victories in globally recognised races, such as the Bathurst 1000, Indy 500, Le Mans, Daytona 500, Daytona 24 Hours, and the Monaco Grand Prix.
Introducing a Real-Time Leaderboard
In a major enhancement to the Gold Star Award, points will now be collected and monitored throughout the racing season, superseding the former end-of-season tally. A live leaderboard will be published and updated monthly, offering fans, teams, and media a clear and engaging view of driver standings as the season unfolds.
This leaderboard will be produced and maintained in conjunction with V8 Sleuth, a prominent name in motorsport media.
