Kota Mizunuma is making waves at Newcastle Jets following his transfer from Yokohama F. Marinos in January. aleagues.com.au analyses the statistics illustrating the Japanese star’s remarkable influence.
Very few players have achieved such a significant impact in the A-Leagues in such a short time as Newcastle Jets’ latest signing.
The Jets successfully signed two-time Japan international Kota Mizunuma, a remarkable catch for the Hunter region back in January. Mizunuma arrived with an impressive track record, having played under Ange Postecoglou at Yokohama F. Marinos and celebrating a J1 League title win with Kevin Muscat.
He has quickly become a pivotal figure for Newcastle.
Although this marks Mizunuma’s first experience outside of Japan after amassing over 300 appearances in the country’s top division, the 34-year-old has integrated effortlessly into the Isuzu UTE A-League, propelling the Jets to a four-match unbeaten streak. Prior to his arrival, Newcastle hadn’t secured a home victory since April of the previous year, a drought that ended against Melbourne Victory on February 8.

Since his debut on January 25, no player has provided more assists than the Japanese veteran, who has recorded three. His contributions have ignited fresh hope for Newcastle’s finals aspirations, with the Jets now targeting three consecutive wins for the first time since 2018.
“He has truly made a significant impact on the Newcastle squad,” remarked A-Leagues icon Archie Thompson during this week’s episode of A-Leagues Download.
“All signs indicated that he would perform at a high level, given his discipline and experience playing at an elite level. His presence is a much-needed asset for the young Newcastle side.”
“You can already see it in his passing – the ball he delivered for Lachie Rose’s header was exceptional. He has hit the ground running.”

Thompson was commenting on Mizunuma’s outstanding contribution during the surprise victory over Adelaide United at Coopers Stadium last week.
He assisted Lachie Rose’s opening goal against Adelaide, marking his third assist in just four appearances since relocating Down Under.
To put this into perspective, although Mizunuma made his first start in Round 19, he has only played 210 minutes of league action.

Nonetheless, the veteran winger has emerged as a standout performer across the league.
Only Macarthur Bulls star Marin Jakolis (14) has created more chances than Mizunuma (13) since his debut on January 25. He also ranks fourth for chances created per 90 minutes (5.6).
With his formidable right foot, Mizunuma leads the league in chances created from set pieces (nine), followed by Jakolis with four. He also holds the top position for successful crosses (13) and successful corners delivered into the box (11).
There’s an intangible quality to Mizunuma’s impact on the Jets – his experience is immensely beneficial to a youthful squad brimming with potential.
He is drawing out the best in his teammates, including Rose and Clayton Taylor.

“It only took me two days to get in touch with him. I had known Kota from my time at Sydney FC with Steve Corica. We faced him in the AFC Champions League,” Jets head coach Rob Stanton told the media.
“He’s an exceptional player. I sold him on our project and what we’re looking to achieve. The timing was perfect for him to make this move.”
“Japanese players view moving abroad as a significant step in their careers, and he saw this as a great opportunity.”
“He liked our playing style and the youthful makeup of the team. After we discussed our ambitions, he was very eager to join. I’m thrilled to have him on board.”
“He’s a great person and brings a presence along with a cultural richness to the changing room, from which we’re all benefitting.”
