On Thursday, FIFA announced its roster of match officials for the World Cup scheduled from June 11 to July 19, featuring 52 referees, including six women.
Football’s governing body will also appoint 88 assistant referees and 30 video match officials, representing all six confederations and 50 member associations.
“The match officials chosen are truly the finest in the world,” stated Pierluigi Collina, FIFA’s head of refereeing.
“These officials were part of a broader pool that was identified and evaluated over the last three years. They participated in seminars and have officiated at FIFA tournaments.”
“Additionally, their performances in both domestic and international matches underwent regular assessments.”
This World Cup, hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will mark the largest edition ever, featuring 48 teams and 104 matches.
That’s an increase of 41 match officials compared to the 32 teams that participated in 64 matches in Qatar four years ago.
“The inclusion of six women match officials reinforces a trend that began four years ago in Qatar as we continue to promote the development of women’s refereeing,” Collina noted, referencing the six women who officiated during the 2022 tournament.
