Wrexham has secured promotion for an unprecedented third consecutive season, triumphing 3-0 at home against Charlton Athletic in League One on Saturday. This victory marks yet another remarkable chapter in their ascent under the stewardship of Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
Sam Smith netted two goals after Ollie Rathbone had broken the deadlock, propelling the Red Dragons into the Championship (the second tier) for the upcoming season in front of an ecstatic crowd at Racecourse Ground, which included Reynolds from Canada and McElhenney from the US.
They have now become the first club in history to achieve three successive promotions across the top five levels of English football.
Phil Parkinson’s squad secured second place with 89 points, with one game still left to play. Birmingham City, who are leading the League One standings with 102 points, had already confirmed their promotion.
Wrexham took control early in the match, with Rathbone scoring in the 15th minute after James McClean executed a clever short corner to set him up. Rathbone made no mistake, finding the net from the edge of the box.
As the home supporters were still celebrating, Smith extended their advantage just three minutes later with a stunning volley.
Matty James delivered a perfectly timed long pass that split Charlton’s defence, allowing Smith to connect with a left-footed volley. He completed his brace in the 81st minute, converting a cross from Max Cleworth with a precise shot just over the head of goalkeeper Will Mannion.
