Inter Miami faced a 2-0 loss against the Vancouver Whitecaps in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup semi-final on Thursday, leaving Lionel Messi’s squad with a significant challenge for the return match next week.
American players Brian White and Sebastian Berhalter scored to secure a well-deserved victory for the Canadian side in front of a packed crowd of 53,837 at BC Place.
Both sides are aiming to reach the continental final for the first time, but the star-studded team from Miami struggled to find their rhythm against Jesper Sorensen’s energetic side, who proved lethal on the counterattack.
The Whitecaps posed an early threat with their pace on the wings, with White assisting Daniel Rios, whose shot was denied by Marcelo Weigandt.
The deadlock was broken in the 24th minute when Pedro Vite delivered a clever chip into the box, allowing White to perfectly time his run and head in his 10th goal in 15 matches across all competitions this season.
Messi’s influence was limited – he was quickly marked by Vancouver and could only manage one ambitious long-range shot in the 29th minute, which soared well over the crossbar.
The Whitecaps maintained their offensive pressure, and Rios saw a header from a corner saved by Oscar Ustari as the home side headed into the interval with a 1-0 lead.
Miami coach Javier Mascherano clearly urged his team to respond during the break, and they returned with renewed determination for the second half.
However, their build-up play was sluggish, and their attacking efforts were predictable. Messi was limited to a free-kick from outside the area, which deflected off a defender but was comfortably handled by Vancouver’s Japanese goalkeeper, Yohei Takaoka.
Berhalter, the son of former USA coach Gregg, displayed relentless energy and smart distribution, but squandered a golden opportunity to double the lead when he drove forward and received a return pass in a promising position, only to send his shot over the bar.
With just five minutes remaining, Vancouver struck again on the counter. Winger Jayden Nelson delivered a low cross to the back post where Berhalter was waiting, and this time he finished emphatically to make it 2-0.
Miami pressed forward in the closing stages in search of an ‘away goal’, but Vancouver held their ground, taking a two-goal advantage back to South Florida for Wednesday’s second leg.
“It feels great, but we have one more match ahead and we can’t let our guard down… we must remain focused,” remarked Berhalter, who commended his team’s performance.
“It’s all about resilience, character, and the determination to keep pushing forward. We’ve been discussing this all week; we know we have what it takes, and it’s not a surprise to us.”
