The Australian Rally Commission (ARCom) has sanctioned modifications to the Rally Observed Licence Test (OLT) procedure for 2025, aimed at enhancing accessibility and ensuring greater consistency and safety among different age groups within the sport.
The alterations approved include:
- OLTs can now be conducted at designated state and club event types, including Khanacross, S1 Rallysprints, and Autocross.
- Clerks of the Course at these events are now authorised to assess OLTs, significantly broadening the pool of assessors.
- The previous under-25 age restriction has been lifted; all new applicants for rally licences must now undergo an OLT.
Alan Vaughan, Motorsport Australia Rally Manager and ARC Sporting Delegate, stated that the recent amendments to the OLT process represent a positive development for encouraging participation in rally driving.
“These changes simplify the journey for aspiring rally drivers as they embark on their journey in the sport, while ensuring the standards associated with a Motorsport Australia rally licence are upheld,” Vaughan remarked.
“By allowing OLTs to take place at a wider range of events and expanding the pool of assessors, we can provide a more consistent and accessible pathway into rallying.
“Ultimately, our aim is to eliminate unnecessary obstacles and facilitate a safer transition for more drivers into the discipline.”
To complete an OLT, drivers must possess a valid civil driver’s licence or learner’s permit.
A copy of the civil driver’s licence needs to be submitted along with the signed Observed Licence Test Assessment form following the successful completion of the test.
These updates aim to lower barriers and promote easier participation in grassroots rallying.
