Zak Butters finds himself in a difficult situation after being cited for using abusive language towards an umpire during Port Adelaide’s match against St Kilda on Sunday.
Currently, there is no audio from the umpire’s microphone available to bolster Butters’ defence, as reported by Tom Morris from SEN.
“Zak Butters is feeling quite frustrated this morning and was equally vexed last night,” Morris shared on SEN Breakfast.
“He believes that umpire Nick Foot’s accusation of him abusing the official has tarnished his reputation and standing in the game.”
“This has significant implications for Zak. It has cost him 50 metres and a goal,” commented Kane Cornes.

“He’s been put on report, which comes with a degree of shame as it indicates he let his team down at a pivotal moment,” he added.
“What are the repercussions for the umpire in this situation?”
The captain of Port Adelaide firmly maintains that he did not use any expletives or abusive language when engaging with umpire Foot throughout the match, which ended in a 14-point loss for his side in Adelaide.
The controversy arose after a free kick was awarded to St Kilda’s Mitch Owens due to being held during a ruck contest.
Butters made a gesture towards the umpire after seeing a replay of the incident, leading to the 50-metre penalty and the subsequent report for abusive language.

Butters is said to have “allegedly questioned Foot’s integrity,” leading the AFL to consider the umpire’s version of events before making a decision regarding Butters.
With no access to the umpire’s microphone recordings, Butters may need to rely on his teammates’ testimonies to support his case as he challenges the claim.
“I’d like to know exactly what language I supposedly used since I approached him after the game just to have a conversation, like any two people would,” Butters explained.
“He indicated he didn’t want to engage with me. All I asked was: ‘How is that a free kick?’ He responded with the 50-metre penalty and said I was on report.”

“I had several teammates right beside me, including Ollie Wines,” he added.
“I’m keen to clarify this situation because I would never speak poorly to an umpire.
“I genuinely want to understand what he believes I said from his perspective.
“There were no swear words or inappropriate language used, which is why I’m frustrated, especially since it resulted in a goal.” Butters further commented.
“I consider myself to be forthright on the field and maintain good relationships with most umpires. I’m certain the club will handle this matter accordingly.
“I would challenge any charge to the ends of the earth, as I know what I said and that it wasn’t offensive.”
Port Adelaide currently sits 10th on the ladder and will face Hawthorn next Saturday afternoon at the MCG.
