According to the latest accounts released on Wednesday, Manchester United incurred a total expense of £14.5 million in severance payments to former manager Erik ten Hag, sporting director Dan Ashworth, and several other football staff members.
The storied club, boasting 20 league titles, finds itself languishing in 15th position in the Premier League following a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday, with only West Ham and Wolves standing between them and the relegation zone.
The anticipated resurgence under new manager Ruben Amorim has yet to bear fruit since he took over from Ten Hag, who was dismissed just 116 days after United activated a clause to extend his contract until 2026.
This expensive choice, made by minority owner Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS group, was exacerbated by the swift departure of Ashworth. He joined from Newcastle on July 1 but exited Old Trafford a mere five months later, on December 8.
The financial ramifications of these decisions were highlighted in United’s results for the quarter ending December 31, classified under ‘exceptional items’.
“Exceptional items for the quarter amounted to a cost of £14.5 million,” read a statement from the club.
“This figure relates to expenses linked to the departure of former men’s first team manager Erik ten Hag and various members of the football staff.”
Manchester United’s first-quarter results revealed that the payout to Ten Hag and his team totalled £10.4 million, suggesting that Ashworth’s exit came at a cost of approximately £4.1 million.
